Sometimes, they just go bad. I have several dead ones from over the years.
But, if it was working well in the other computer, I don't see any reason why it wouldn't in the current one. And, being set as Slave doesn't make it not work.
But, try connecting it and setting it properly on another IDE cable just to see if it's that particular connection causing the problem.
Another thing to try is to go into Device Manager, expand the CD/DVD drives and remove them all. Reboot and let Windows redetect them. See if things work after that.

EDIT: One other thing to double check: Although I've never had a drive recognize when the cable is connected in reverse, do make sure the colored stripe is located nearest the Molex (power) plug. There's either a red or black stripe on the IDE cable and it goes nearest the power plug on the drive.
