Ok the FX60 is installed ..... few questions please

Windows cp is not recognising the processor as an FX60 it recognises the speed but not the model it just says AMD processor model unknown

CPUz recognises that the CPU is an FX60

does thios mean than windows may not recognise the model but accepts that i have a dual core processor

is there some software that will show there are 2 cores in the pc now ?

ok scratch one bit device manager shows 2 cores enabled it just doesnt give the name of the processor

any ideas

Is your motherboards BIOS up to date?

Aren't there some AMD dual core patches for XP?

i have installed the driver for dual core but i am having big problems updating the bios

if i try the liveupdate method i get unable to open bootblock and the flash doesnt go ahead

i am not confident enough to use a floppy or USB stick to update the bios

i have the 3.70 bios installed at the moment and since then there have been a few updates but nothing the really seems essential .. heres a list am i missing somthing i really need ?

3.8 Bios

- Update CPU micro code.
- Improve compatibility problem with some AMD K8 Opteron cpu.

3.9 Bios

- Support "Cool'n'Quiet" function under Windows 2000.
- Update CPU ID. <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< is this possibly what i need ??

3.a

- Support NVIDIA 7900X2 PCI-E VGA card.
- Add safety recover function to revert BIOS into default setting when system unable to boot due to overclocking.
To enable the function please press the reset button or power button 3 times.

I would be less confident updating the BIOS within windows than with a floppy or USB stick.
Most boards of that caliber have failsafe features to reset the board in case of a bad flash. If you want your CPU to be detected properly then you are most likely going to have to flash the board. Does MSI have some sort of free support that will guide you through the flash so it is documented if there is a problem?

I had to do a bios update off a floppy disk - solved the problem. Never had to load a software driver that I know of.

cairo, you should be able to find the complete procedure of updating BIOS in DOS at the motherboard manufacturer website. no?
and if your motherboard has an embedded BIOS flash utility in flash ROM, then during system boots up you can load and use this utility (through the BIOS menu) to flash BIOS, however you will need to have the BIOS file on a floppy disk.

Yeah it can be risky to update your BIOS through Windows. If Windows crashes for example during the update you can kill your mobo in worst case scenario. Much better to flash through floppy or through BIOS utility as Panging said above.

Check MSI website and look for the manual for your mobo. Check if there is a utility within the BIOS that supports you to update BIOS safely via floppy.

The $10 floppy drive can still save folks TONS of hassle. It's gonna suck when that option is not included in any motherboards.

the procedure of updating BIOS in mode DOS for PC motherboard that is equipped with a Award/AMI BIOS is basically the same, which is as follow:

- Making a clean DOS boot disk (you can download a boot floppy disk creator at bootdisk.com/ (Driver Free Disk For BIOS Flashing),
- Downloading the appropriate BIOS flash utility (a DOS .exe program that is made specifically for your BIOS version.) and BIOS file from the motherboard manufacturer website; and then copy the flash utility and BIOS file to the boot disk,
- Setting in BIOS to boot from this boot disk, and then boot the computer into DOS mode,
- Loading the flash utility and BIOS file, then flash the BIOS. then once it's complete, exit the flash utility and restart the computer,
- at next computer starts up enter BIOS setup program and load BIOS fail-safe defaults, Save the setting and exist.

One other thing Cairo.

I remember reading a while ago somewhere in mobo manual advice that went something like this:

Do not flash BIOS with big upgrade in one go. If there is a big jump between your current BIOS version to the newest one then flash two jums at a time. In other words for excample if you use F1 Bios then skip F2 and Flash F3. Then skip F4 and Flash F5. Then keep doing this till you get to your desired BIOS version. If you do big jump it could cause problem.

I don't know if this advice is still correct but I always keep to it just in case!!
