OLD Printer setup (Baud/Parity/Stop Bits) Help!

I'm not sure it's even remotely possible for this old thing, but hey, pile of businesses still need it.


Anyways a local business had thier old printer basically give up on them and now they've got another old one (as nothing new will work), they know it works, great under any windows system, or dos, but the thing is, it doesn't connect to anything of the sort, they need to connect it directly to this computer that basically spits out raw printer data.

However, my dilema, i need to setup the printer manually, specifically the printer (as there is no software or hardware on the computer to change).

Heres the deal, i got the good ol Raven PR-9101 printer sitting here along with the manual. I've scoured over it looking for anything of the 3 things i need, i can change orgina, 7/8 bit and a number of other things, but nothing appears to even remotely relate to the baud, the stop bits, or parity.

Now i'm guessing, wildly here, that apparently this printer can't be manually setup for this specific task and a different printer is needed. Would i be correct?

Or for anyone that MAY know, is perhaps some of the names of what i'm looking for are differently worded? (course i couldn't find anything along the lines of EVEN for a setting or 9600 or hell even a singel digit 1 for a setting using any of the dip switches on it or front panel settings.)


Anyways, anyone figure that this printer just won't work or am i missing something.

Sounds like you need to set up an old dot matrix - triplicate forms? I can check some on Monday if you can give make and model info. Maybe I can get you at least a name of a brand that still supports that format if I can't assist with you already have - there aren't many left...

A brand or model that still supports it would be nice... but i wouldn't push any serious numbers on it atm as it's not extremely high priority.

If it uses the serial interface, then that is an OPTIONAL EXTRA, and may not be present on the replacement - in that case, getting hold of a seperate serial to parallal converter box would be easier than getting hold of an obsolete printer part.

unfortuneatly, i've the manual, and the ones uploaded arn't any different.


matth, heres the interesting thing.

The old printer has a standard parrelle port on it, along with a parrelle port that is female (i thought this was slightly odd but never thought much of it)

They however were able to use the cable on either port so i was under the impression that either would work fine.

The printer however was programable for each little thing, com port, stop bits, etc. The replacement that was brought in wasn't capable of being setup like that.

Also, using a even newer printer with a USB ~> Parrelle adaper doesn't work at all.

Baud, stop bits, parity are serial port parameters only.

You're saying this is a parallel port connection then, not a serial?

As for 7/8 bits, this must be a very old distinction in parallel, as far as I've ever known, parallel has always been 8 bit.

Is it the same model as the old one, or just another "old printer" - in the days before Epson emulation was almost unversal, there were a lot more oddball ones, though getting that wrong usually results in pages and pages of junk.
