What's that noise?
There's a ringing like noise coming from case. I think it's my HD. It's a Western Digitial 60 GB 7200 RPM. I know it's not my fans because I've unplugged them all and still with the ringing. What is the deal with that?

Remove the power connector from your HD and power-up - see if you still here the noise.

Just did. Still there.
I was moving the HD to a different slot to try to supress the noise somehow. No go.

Make sure no screws are loss, etc. inside your case. I had a simular problem and also tought it was my HD. |

I dunno man. What about the CPU fan or PSU fan. Also try unplugging you CD drives.

It's rumored that a CPU can actually emit noise, especially if a HALT based software cooler is in use.
The coils used by switchmode regulators can also be a noise source, if inadequately sealed.
Does the noise change or disappear in sleep mode?

Why the hell would a CPU emit noise? It is just a fancy piece of silicon crystal with electrons running around in it, with NO moving parts, so I don't see how something with no moving parts can make sound, especially if you are using a half-supported (HALT) command...
EDIT: Those coils in question wouldn't be on the CPU phyically, if I understand anything about CPU's and packaging...

The CPU is not a likely source of ringing, but it has certainly been reported that a ticking noise has been noted - YES, coming from the CPU, under halt-cooler software.
The mechanism was never fully explained, but (I think it was a metal-capped CPU) suggestions were thermal shock, or magnetic excitation as the current pulsed from standby to on.
How it was ever detected above fan noise, I've no idea!
More likely, is the switchmode regulator coils on the motherboard.
Even if the main switching frequency is ultrasonic, there can be variations at a lower frequency.
Anything related to those power systems, is likely to vary with load.
