Replacing Dell Motherboard

I replaced my Dell Dimension 2400 motherboard with an MSN S478 SIS Chipset Motherboard. I replaced the harddrive and tried using the dell reinstall disk to install Windows XP onto the hard drive. Does the disk only have some of the files needed to install the OS? Do I have to get an Windows XP disk to install it? Is there anyway I can get one witout having to buy a whole new OS package?

If there are hidden files on the original hard drive, could I reformat that hard drive and reinstall windows and use the new motherboard?

well to answer ur first post.U should check the manual u got with ur PC regarding re-installation.And if u are replacing the motherboard,it's always better to do a fresh install.

no, just reset the ide controller drivers to the microsoft ones, switch the mobo, boot, windows will ask to be reactivated by phone..... or net..... but i could only do it by phone... it's from dell so it's legit right, you tell an automated voice #'s, it gives more back, voila xp is reactivated, mobo is switched, get rid of old mobo drivers, put in new ones

or a simple answer to first post, i think xp install cd would be what you need for a fresh install..... dunno what a 'dell reinstall disk' contains... as long as you have/know your cdkey
