I think it depends on the socket and what it's stepping is. I know some are 266.

afaik he (he said this via MSN) has a mobo that does 333 max, and wants a 3000, but can only find 400 versions, which would leave it running a lot slower than it could be

How much is he looking to spend on that +3000? It might just be cheaper to get a new mobo (msi has some nice 70$ socket 939 ones) and you can get a athlon 64 +3000 preaty cheap.
