Raid is when you have 2 or more hard drives linked and working together, most commenly for gaming people use what is called Raid0. Raid0 is not actully a raid (it does not backup data.) It puts parts of files on each hard drive, this can greatly decrease load times for data. However, a downside of this is if one hard drive goes, the data is lost (or is as good as lost) on all the hard drives in the raid.
Sata is a type of connection that can be used for Hard drives, and some cd/dvd roms. You need to buy Sata drives specificly. (most people still use IDE) Sata1 is not that much faster then IDE, has a few technical bonuses like hot swaping and wiremanagment in the case is much less of a hassle. Sata2 is roughly twice as fast as IDE and SATA1, however; very few hard drives can reach IDE/SATA1 speeds so this is kind of pointless...

ok, i understand SATA now. Are you saying with RAID you can take a 60gb hard drive and a 40gb hard drive and 'combine' them into one?

there are many different forms of RAID available for use. like MiDri said, RAID 0 is most common amoungst gamers because of the decreased load times.
RAID 1 is where both drives save the information written to them identically. therefore, if one drive goes, you still have all your information saved to the other drive.
now.....as to setting up a RAID array, ALL hard drives must be identical. they must be the same in capacity, have the same speed, have the same data connection (IDE, SATA)(5400RPM, 7200RPM, etc.), have the same cache (2Mb cache, 8Mb cache, etc.) , be the same model, and be the same manufacturer. otherwise, you'll have nothing but headaches

I changed my mind, i have more questions about SATA. When you say very few drives can reach IDE/SATA speed, are you referring to thge RPM? and what is PATA?

SATA is the new technology of HDDs. PATA basically refers to IDE hard drives.
and when referring to the speed, it's not referring to the disk speed (7200RPM and so forth), but to the transfer speeds.....Mb/s.
