Cooling Options?
I'd like to replace the stock cooler for my BFG 7800 GTX OC. It's been causing my other components to run pretty hot lately. I'm looking at 2 options:
http://www.frozencpu.com/vid-43.html?id=WnPrZ9NT
OR
http://www.frozencpu.com/vid-59.html?id=WnPrZ9NT (The LED version)
I'm really considering the NV Silencer partly because it vents the hot air outside the case, which inturn drops the overall case temp. Not sure it the Zalman does that too.
Also could someone recommend a good aftermarket Northbridge cooler for my DFI Lanparty Ultra-D mobo. The stock one does a crappy job of cooling it, even with as5 applied, plus it's loud as hell. Thanks for any suggestions

I have the Zalman but not the LED version and it does not vent outside the case. It does do a good job and better than my previous Artic Cooling Accelero X2 Cooler as it was not good enough to allow me to play games in this heat. The at rest temp of my GPU was 57 degrees C and with just the Return to Proxycon bench on 3DMark06 went to 80 degrees C. With the Zalman connected the at rest temp is around 45 degrees C and I can play games now as it doesnt reach 70 degrees now under load. I do have it set to max and it actually isn`t noisy but should be sufficient to cool all graphics cards at idle or so I read somewhere.
The Zalman only fits the one way round as the fan is offset to the copper core and if fitted incorrectly the card will not reach the slot in the motherboard. It is relatively easy to fit and comes with heatsinks for the RAM chips and a Fanmate speed controller.
I replaced my stock cooler on my ATI X1800XT as it was a bit noisy. It roared at power on for a few seconds and calmed down to a reasonable level after that but during a gaming session you noticed it winding up the volume and at the end of level then noticed the noise.

i give a vote to the NV Silencer 5 . why need more hot air circulating inside your case?

Ok, so does the Zalman do a good job of keeping case temps low? I'm sure it does a better job than the stock cooler, but how does it compare to the NV Silencer?

For what you're looking to do, the nv silencer is right up your alley - getting hot air out of your case. I don't think it will cool the gpu itself as well as the zalman, but if you're not pushing your gpu clocks to hell and back, that's not an issue.
As for a northbridge cooler, I have no idea. When I replaced my last one (years ago), I used an old celeron or pentium 2 cpu hs/f.

Well the GTX is already oc'ed by default. I don't plan on pushing it much further from the default clocks (460 / 1300).
Btw, thanks for the suggestions hackerx, but i'm not sure if that Zalman heatsink would work with my vid card, especially where the northbridge chip is located.

Well I have a ATI Silencer (same as NV cept for ATI ) and it's silent as hell... You really don't hear it (and my PC is whisper quiet) and in addition, more hot air out the PC
I've only read good things about both mate but I'd go for the NV silencer since it reduces case temps... And cheap + good warrenty!
And for the Northbridge, hmmmm I only know that zalman...

Your second options does quite well on our motherboards.
Honestly both of these will do quite nicely. I prefer zalmas because getting the "contacts" just right on the AC's can be a pain in the ass. Also don't even think about getting the newer AC cooler the Accelro ro whatever it's called. I just pushes all that hot air right to the chipset.
Sad thing is I haven't seen any good third party options for our chipset. If you have any video worth any thing it always blocks it. So you need some thing with the same profile as the original.

Just out of curiousity, what are chipset, case and cpu temps at idle, Necrosis?

CPU 26-28c
Chipset 46c
Case 43c <-- this is actually the power section above the IDE ports.
I'm not sure what my actual case temp is.
GPU temp is 40c

this is my system and it runs pretty good. The GPU pulls its weight considering its overclocked andall. Im running the stock cooler which is the 6NV silencer. This is a silencer that u can bouy on the market for bout 30 bucks and it lowers noise and cools great!!!!!!!!!!
dont forget to check out *** and join forums please!!!!!
Edited by Grace : Nice system, but no one seems to be asking for a forum address...first and last warning you'll ever get. And of course don't forget to check the RULES which you should have read when joining this forum.
