Help with CPU

Hi, I just recieved a CPU that I ordered off ebay. There is a transparent plastic like cover on it, is this supposed to be taken off?

you can leave it on, or you can take it off. honestly though, it doesn't really matter IMO. the most important part of the CPU itself is the core (the purple square). that is the most important part that needs to stay unharmed. basically, so long as you install the heatsink properly, nothing will happen to the core.

BTW.....why did you get a socket A CPU?

Hey thanks for the help! As for buying a socket A, my other xp2400+ died, so I found a cheap replacement for the time being.

i think u should take the plastic off!!!Otherwise how is the heat supposed to get transffered.The thermal paste won't make contact with the cpu and nor will the heatsink.

no....the heat transfer is all done through the core. the thermal paste is located on the core between the core and the heatsink it makes contact upon.

uh huh. Between the plastic and the heatsink/CPU core then ??

for gods sakes, yes of course the plastic comes off.

i never said that the plastic never came off. look at the picture again. the core is exposed leaving only the thermal paste between the core and the heatsink.

the L2 cache is protected by the plastic film. the plastic can remain where it's at, or be removed. considering the amount of heat that is in that small area, i would remove the plastic piece though.

er...aren't Socket A cores black or green? pretty sure the pink layer is an additional plastic layer for protecting the core. I have never seen Socket A with that clear plastic over it....looks like something the shipper added themselves. also that plastic is clearly covering the entire core, not just the SMDs. ...I'm running a naked Venice right now...this isn't exactly virgin territory here...

remove the plastic it is sometimes used in shipping to protect the processor.

nope....not all socket As were green, and i never saw one that was black unless it had burned up due to improper HSF installation

. that is the correct color of the core itself.

and a s-939 is much different that s-462 cpu
