Monitor Argument
O.k i'm hoping that you can end a long lasting feud once and for all.
Me and my dad both have pc's and whenever I shutdown mine I turn the monitor off using the button
when my dad does he leaves the monitor on and leaves it on in "power saving mode" (orange light on some monitors)
I say that turning off the monitor is best as it saves power and that because it is off the monitor isn't trying to display anything (as it is off) so it damages it the least
My dad says that leaving the monitor on is best as turning it off and then on again over time damages monitors
Who's right?
Cube623
btw does the monitor being CRT or LCD make a difference to the argument?

Power cycling is hard on electronics. So your dad is correct. However, it actually matters more /w CRTs vs LCDs.

indeed... but not completely true.
The moment you plug in your monitor to a wall socket.. it is charged....
When you hit the power button, it further charges things up.
However, it is true that it is best to let the monitor do it's own power saving mode. the more you turn it off and on again, the more it tears down the life of the product.
But it doesn't mean leaving a signal to the monitor on at all times either.
It is best to fire up your computer in the for the first time and leave it on all day, then shut it down at night. If you going to be using it for just a little while and be gone for several hours, shut down the computer then.
Let the monitor do it's own thing, they are designed for it.

the last thing you want.. with either an LCD/Plasma/CRT display is to leave it on with a signal showing the same thing for any amount of time.... you get "imageburn" effect.. which is something you REALLY don't want.. trust me, it's not pretty, and it basically forces you to buy a new monitor.
Long i mean 15 minutes is a reasonable amount of time to leave a monitor showing the same thing.... but i'd try not to go over that, make sure a screensaver runs, and i'd even suggest having the monitor go into standby after 30 minutes.
Currently every machine i build i set those peramiters. 15minutes to screensaver... and 30 minutes for the monitor to be shutdown.

on my workingplace we have mabe 18 monitors running 24h 7days. no screensavers, no power saving mode, i never saw a 'imageburn' effect. modern monitors can handle that.

there are still cases where it's still evident.. i recently worked on a new compaq that had sevear imagebun... so much that i could actually read the "harley Davidson" in the logo and the outskirts.
i mean it depends on the background.. if the background remains at all times and never is changed..
CRTs get a bit darker washed out, occasionally get a few wrong hues and colors in different places depending on the background. Hell i've seen some fairly new monitors with the icons burnt right in there.. you litterly move it and it almost looks like a copy is still there...
