Bellator is on a distinguished road

why is using AMD's cool n quiet a 'bad' thing?

I keep seeing information about people choosing to disable AMD's cool n quiet technology, since it apparently saps performance, but I'm not sure I understand why...

I thought Cool n Quiet is suppossed to leave the proc clock at max and only downclock it when the computer is idle? Why would it ever be a bad thing to use cool n quiet then?

It isn't a bad thing unless you're overclocking, but most leave it disabled anyway because the A64's run pretty cool even without it enabled.

ah ok... what happens if you enable it while overclocking?

there are problems with different applications that are dependant on timings.. when cool n quiet is enabled.... the cpu's (or dual cores) are throttled back to save power/heat and whatnot... This in turn really messes them up very very badly....

In theory nothing happends there either as long as you haven't altered the vcore, since it throttles with the multiplier (downwards). But if you have set your vcore to a specific value it will stay on that value while the multiplier and MHz go down. I'm not sure how bad this would be (if at all). Maybe there is something more to it but I don't know what that would be....

Vcore will not harm anything enless it's to high...

if your vcore is say a full 0.1 above normal, and it works flawlessly at full speeds.... and then the cpu is throttled back.... the vcore remains.. and nothing will really change at all... you just have the same voltages.

Pus, that cool and quiet feature reacts very quickly. I can go from burning a dvd to just web browsing and within 10-15 seconds of finishing the dvd the CQ starts downspeeding. Maybe if they let you specify an idle time value of say 15 minutes of inactivity or something it wouldn't be too bad. But it seems like it has the cpu speeds constantly fluctuating. Not my cup of tea.

because in my experience it doesn't work!
I had it on and it would limit my cpu to 0.8ghz all the time! even during games (see the thread AMD Athlon 64 3400+ Cool 'n' Quiet Not Working Correctly )

riles9262 will become famous soon enough

You're not the first that i've seen having those speed problems with cnq cube. On my system, it hasn't done a lot (my cpu is pretty cool), but i disable it anyway.
