PC Problems

Hi, I am getting some problems with my PC. A few days ago the PC froze on me making some weird beeping noises. I switched it off and then tried to turn it back on and while it seemed to boot up for a few secs it would then just kinda stop and nothing would appear on the screen.

I have tried turning it off leaving it for a while and then turning it on and sometimes it does boot up but then freezes either on booting up or when it gets into Windows.

I am not currently sure whats causeing this but I believe its the MB as if it was the graphics card I would have thought of the times it didn't do anything, the "no signal" graphic would apper on the monitor.

I can't do much about finding what is the problem at the moment as I am at Uni, but I am heading home this weekend to try and see if I can solve the problem.

If anyone has any ideas what could be causing this or if it is MB thats busted then any help would be greatly appreciated.

There are a number of things it could be:

1. Overheating. Make sure all the fans are plugged in and that they are working when the computer is first turned on. Leave the side panel off in order to observe the function of the fans. This would be my number 1 suspicion. If there's a lot of dust inside, use canned compressed air to clean it out.

2. Bad Memory: Download MemTest86 (Google will provide a good number of download sites) and run this test from a boot disk. Leave it run for a few hours to determine if the system RAM is bad. If there's more than one stick of RAM, run this test on one at a time if it shows errors.

3. CPU going bad. Likely not, but, if there are no other problems determined in the first two, this would be the next suspected problem.

4. Power Supply. The beeping wouldn't normally happen with a Power Supply going bad, but, it's worth considering.

5. And, of course, it could be the motherboard going bad. Rule out all the others if possible.

I don't think it would be the overheating as I have tried it with both case lid off and on and there are two fans facing the motherboard that blows air onto it.

I don't think its the power supply either as everything turns "on" (fans turn on, HD starts up) but nothing happens after that most of the time which made me think it was the MB in the first case as there could be a bad signal or something which only makes it work a little bit for some of the time.

Anyway I will try out all the stuff anyway and see if any of that helps. Thanks again

Overheating is still my first suspicion based on the beeping you heard. If the fans aren't spinning at their appropriate speeds, things will get hot even with the sides off. Check especially the fan on the CPU.

Is it possible that the computer has been jolted in the recent past? If so, it might have caused something to become improperly seated.
