I'm thinking about a new AMD CPU....to FX or not to FX....
Thats the question.Number1,I dont give a flying flip about bragging rights.I have had FX CPU's for about a year now & get just about the same horsepower without goofing around with the multiplyer.I'm just adjusting the voltage & the FSB....OR am I doing something wrong?I surely dont lay claim to be the best,or nearly the best OCer around.Thats why I hang out here.Cause you guys know youre stuff. And U know who U are....the OLD timers. And some of the new peeps too. When I 1st came here I could work wonders with a 426HEMI but didnt know jack shit bout OCing a CPU.THANKS!So what do U think about this new CPU?What should I get?The FX-60?FX-57?Or stick with the top of the line x2?I'm looking for the most bang for the buck....Again....MUCH thanks!

I would stick with a top of the line x2 than getting a fx57/60, inless you have money to burn, and u have a need for unlocked cpu which imo isnt worth it or you can hold the phone for a while and wait for the new amd chipset n processor

If you would really like to overclock you might think about one of the Opteron processors.

Yes, they are for servers. But a lot of people have been using them on regular desktops because they OC quite well.

opterons are basicly downclocked san deigo cores, slowest opteron is 1.8ghz i believe but can easy go to 2.5-2.7 and more
the single core opterons anyway

Opterons aren't just for servers anymore!
I've got an opty 148 and have it at 250x11 which gives me 2.75Ghz that's 50mhz shy of a FX57 and I can do it basically at stock voltage.
there are a few differences in opterons and regular A64's. for starters they all have 1mb cache. And they are tested more... so your chances of getting a good one are higher. Plus, they are very reasonably priced. I paid about 250 for my cpu and it performs like a 900 cpu. (and I haven't even tested how far it can go!)

I like it! I'm getting my new RAM today. 2Gb of g.skill HZ DDR500. It uses Samsung UCCC IC's and many people have reported DDR550-560 with them so I may try to get a higher OC. I'm sitting happily at 2.75 at the moment just bc this board is a pain to get stable w/ TCCD RAM, which is what I have @ DDR500 2,5-3-3-7

I would still go for the X2. They would come handy in the very near future, Opterons, on the other hand, are just a normal processor in my point of view.

Why?
The Opterons over clock better since they're higher quality core. This is the reason why you pay more for them.

I don't mean to burst your bubble... but you couldn't be farther from the truth! You can get both dual and single core opterons. So a dual core opty would be just as good as an X2 (which is just a dual core A64) and many optys are better because not all X2's have 1mb cache per core (some only have 512kb) while all optys have 1mb cache per core.
