Part 1

First things first:

  properties [P]

Start irfanview press [p] or use the mouse and go to Options|Properties

Here you see 10 tab pages

First tab. is used for file handling jpg, pcd & gif

No need to change anything ; leave as it is

Language tab, for choosing a language

(German or English)*

Video/sound tab, I will not use in this tutorial.

tab 2: Extensions

Click on “Images only” box

(this way all images will be shown by Irfanview as default in windows,

but you will still able to use the image in other paint programs)

If you like you can also check

“add irfanview to send to” which then shows up in the right click menu of windows,

provided  you click on a file (highlight aka activate)

I do not use this, but that’s up to you, if you like it, use it J

click “Miscellaneous” box

Here you have the choice of choosing an icon.

Check the use different icons.

You may use the Icon-Plug In, which is handy to show up in windows, not only for

the filename but file type as well,

like this:

or like this (depending on windows version (W-ME,W2K & XP) click view/thumbnails.

There is also a thumbnail-option in irfanview , but more on that later.

I do not use the other shell options.

click ok

click  the File Handling tab

Here you can choose a default directory for

your images to copy to [F7]

or move to [F8] (will delete source).

Use these if you have one folder for all your images

and for safety check of all other options

I do not use it, I use the thumbnail part for moving and deleting files

(more on that later)

Click ok

Click Viewing tab

These are my settings

I find this gives me the best results when viewing images.

Change them as you like.

When done click ok.

Click  Misc.1 tab

Again my settings

Those in the yellow highlight have to be set in the way you feel best to use.

The rest is self explanatory.

Press ok

Press Misc.2 tab

Again my settings

check help file or the FAQ [Frequently Asked Questions]

in irfanview for more explanation, if needed,

press ok

press Misc.3 tab

default settings + I checked Thumbnails, under Show/Hide Toolbar buttons, because I use it a lot

last tab on this row, PlugIns, are some plug in options

use these if applicable

Well this concludes the Options part.

Boring.. but it had to be done

In the Next part we really are going to use irfanview
