do a reset global settings, but save your dsp-settings first.

It just means that the Master Volume is muted, which I think the OP figured out.

hehe - it seems the OP has discovered (read: Accidentially hit) the 'mute' button on their MM keyboard. I use mine all the time. As well as the Volume control.

Under win98SE this comes up also with my old CT4790 but sound is playing fine, under winXP this problem never happened. BTW: I have no mute button on the keyboard and all volumes are up. I mentioned this a year before, but no answer - since there is no real problem for me, I simply ignore the red X inbetween...

@TravelRec,
Check the Windows Mixer on you 98SE machine and make sure the Master Volume is not muted there.
i.e.
If you are using the ProFx plugins instead of epilog, then you will still hear the sound with the Master Volume muted, as the muting is done inside of epilog.

I tried this also - and should be noted that for muticard setups, make sure you have the SAME device selected in KX as what shows as the default device shown in Windows.
In other words - I have my SB350 as the default sound device - but at boot up, by default the device selected in KX is the CT4832 - putting a check in windows MUTE - didnt put the red x in KX icon - UNTIL I selected the SB350 card in KX (check next to - Right click KX icon, Devices 1: CT4832 or 2: SB350.
Not sure if travle rec has multicard setup - but I could see this as an overlooked situation.As it seems the KB MUTE will affect ALL cards - that check box ONLY mutes the card showing as default device.

I am using ProFX of course , no multicard here - the 98SE mixer master fader was muted indeed (since I never used it, I have not seen this bloody checked box...) - unmuted it, the X is gone. I´m looking forward to the next boot up Thanx Russ for the info!
