slow soundfont loading; headphones muting speakers, but late?

Hi --

After finally completing the installation process and getting most application-related issues resolved, I'm still having two problems:

1) Sound fonts load extremely slowly, taking easily ten times as long as they did previously on the same system. Are there memory management parameters I can be tweaking to fix this?

2) I've chosen the option under which connecting headphones mutes the speakers. However, apparently it does not take effect until kXMixer runs, which means that the Windows boot-up sound is still sent to the speakers. Can I change that?

Thanks --

no, until the kXmixer is run, only the basic audio routing is enabled, so no extra DSP/mixer controls are available
