Smilie buffer settings

Hello there, firstly these drivers are great, I can get 8 simultaneous inputs with 2 sb live cards, and latency down to 2.66 ms, thank you for that. But could someone explain to me what affect the various buffer settings under the settings tab do. I know that if I reduce the playback buffer size I get horrible noises in normal windows apps. Any help in setting these to the optimal value would be apreciated.

well, the settings are optimal by default...
you can get lower latency for "normal windows apps" by redusing playback/record buffers but:
1. Do you need this? Generally you use ASIO for low latency streaming and don't care about latency in "normal windows apps"
2. To get stable playback with lower buffer settings you should have both hardware and software configured near perfectly...

Thanks for the reply, I'm still not sure I understand though. Are you saying that these buffers only affect windows apps and not ASIO settings, if so I'll leave them alone, but I'm looking to get the best possible ASIO performance and wondered if there was anything to be gained by altering these settings.

Yes i am. kX ASIO is only affected by setting latency from the ASIO control panel (accessed via ASIO host)... Also disabling of unused kX ASIO inputs/outputs generally improves perfomance/stability...

Thanks for the reply, I understand now. Just out of curiosity though is there any site or document that does explain the function of these buffers.

Thanks Wynn

Help files rulezzzz!

Yes, such document exists and it is sitting on your hard-drive... and its name is kxhelp
Hardly recommended... at least to familiarize oneself with some kx concepts...

-----
not from help:

Well, their names are self-explaining (except maybe tram)...

playback & record buffer affect MME (and DirectSound? - fixme) playback & recording... basically - lower buffer size gives lower latency and lower stability...
ac3 buffers used when playing/decoding ac3 stream..
tram buffer is the size of memory can be used by dsp for delays
(effects like reverb etc..) - generally you should not touch that at all (except some troubleshooting situations)...
