SX, VST and CPU
I have a small problem which puts me in a rather conservative state of mind.
I've been using Cubase VST/32 for some time and since I started to use the KX drivers everything works like a charm. Mostly the reduced latency gave me new strenght to create.
I even got bold enough to switch to Cubase SX, but no matter what I do songs start to stutter when using no more than say, 3 VSTi's and 2 VST Fx. I used more than double in VST/32 and with 10 times lower latency...
Is SX so much more CPU consuming than VST? Or can I just not setup SX right?

Yes, unfortunately SX2 (not SX1) is much more CPU consuming than VST.

Ok.. *sigh* Thanks..
Not much to do then... or should I get my hands on SX1 instead? What will I gain compared to VST and loose compared to SX2?

In my opinion Cubase VST 32 was (is) an excellent program, and there is no need for change to SX if you don't miss the new features, mostly related to audio processing and manipulation. SX1 is uses almost the same interface than SX2 and has many of its features, but consumes less then SX2. So if you want to switch to SX, version 1 can be very useful for learning and then jump to version 2 or 3 when you have a stronger machine. In this case the changing will be very easy.
In case of SX1 I recommend version 1.0.6

I agree totally, VST is excellent. I wanted to change to SX mostly for two reasons: I want to keep up, and I felt limited by the number of instruments and effects in VST. VST feels more like home, but I suppose it was time to move out and into something bigger...
I currently use SX 2.2.0 but all changes to the better get lost in the shadow of CPU.
But this is one good example of why I love this forum!
Thanks man! I'll change to 1.0.6. Right now. Stronger machine will follow later.
Maybe one step forward would have been better than the two I took.

Confirmed, version 1.06 runs pretty stable and fast, tested on PIII 400Mhz and PIII 600MHz - no problems so far. It also runs on P1 166Mhz with 8 tracks w/o problems, but no fx please .

I've installed 1.0.6. Works perfect, and it's a big difference in cpu usage. But, I miss the analogue synth...

Which one is it? I'm not sure whether it works or not if you put it into your vst plugins folder. I might send it to you if you want. Let me know.

SX2 plugs unfortunately do not run with SX1x, they are implemeted in the code, so no dll to copy. And if there are dlls, they also donīt work . Try some good and free plugins at www.kvr-vst.com

I should say that the problem is in me, not SX..
SX2 has a synth called Analogue, but even if i copy the dll's the synth won't work.
Still, in this case the problem would be me... I should just forget about the Analogue and settle for the other 30 ones or so I have... and maybe decide which 3-4 ones to use...
I think I have all the good ones, some of them thanks to kvr. Problem again, the nice ones are quite cpu consuming (including the FM7, the Albino and the Superwave). More info on my system on my web pages... Fortunately for me I very much like the sounds of JX10 and JX16...

The most efficient free synth is 'Synth1', although much simpler than Superwave it is rather useful and you would probably be able to load 7-8 instances on your 1ghz machine. Check the KVR site for download.

I've been interested in vsti synths etc as analternative to soundfonts, so thanx for giving us that website, esp; re the synth 1. i have downloaded and really impressed with the useability of it.
edit-any other good synths, drum creating software worth a mention from that site... there are sooo many ?

Do you want drum creating or drum sample player?
Basically, when it comes to synths, it's all about what you want from them. I like the Free Alpha, and the CM-101 is very easy to use. And as I mentioned in a previous post - don't under estimate JX-16 that comes with Cubase. Still, all of them sounds very electronic and "plastic".
If you want a free (and very good) drum creating software, try Stomper! If you want to pay, then go for Waldorf Attack.

Oops! Forgot. The three synths I've found most useful from KVR would actually be: rcg:audio Triangle I & II and mda JX10. Don't be nervous about JX10's gui. Looks can be decieving...
And when I think about it, all songs available for download on my site are made mostly with JX16 and JX10...

Here are some nice free ones as well. They're all made with SynthEdit, and quite simple. But still, they are nice and useful.
