Redirecting sound from SB Live to EMU

I apologize for a silly question in advance. However I would really appreciate your help with this.

What I have:
* SB Live 4832 with KX Drivers (Speakers and TV).
* EMU 0404 with standard drivers (Headphones).

What I want:
* To have sound from one of KX outputs (4/5 for example) via EMU when I want it without hassle.
* Avoid fiddling with windows/players setting each the time.

I believe it is possible to configure both drivers to achieve such configuration. How would you do that?

easiest way is to make a direct connection to the E-MU 0404 from the live

does the E-MU card have a CD_SPDIF connector?

EMU has:
* XCARD_IN
* XCARD_OUT

SB Live has:
* TAD
* CD_IN
* AUX_IN

What do I need to connect?

Can ASIO be used for this purpose?

no, this is not a software thing

you need to use the AUD_EXT or SPDIF_EXT header of the live (depending which model it is) and you will need to find an SPDIF input on the E-Mu card

Err, hey! How'd you do that? I just got an Emu 0404, and I can't get the KX drivers to work on the live at the same time as the 0404 drivers are installed for the 0404.

It goes like this:

Install KX drivers for live.
Install Emu 0404 drivers for Emu 0404.
KX drivers are suddenly installed, but not working whilst the default SB Live! drivers have reinstalled themselves.
Uninstall (remove) default SB Live Drivers AND/OR re-install KX drivers.
Emu 0404 drivers are suddenly not working.
Re-install Emu 0404 drivers.
KX drivers are suddenly not working.

And so on, and so forth...

It does ask something about installing for a 10k2 chip rather than a 10k1 (is that the Emu?), but if I say no, it doesn't seem to change anything...

Installing drivers is quite easy. Just answer NO to all attempts of KX installer to install anything for EMU (recognized as 10k2 or KX Generic) and NO to all attempts of EMU installer to install anything for SB Live (recognized as 10k1). In case with EMU installer, there will no actual prompt. Instead you would have to choose "Stop installation" when the windows compatibility dialog comes up. Follow these simple rules and you will be fine.

I had this configuration working for a couple of days. Then I started having REAL problems. My SB Live started conflicting with internal PCI ADSL modem when used simultaneously. As result, either SB Live sound disappears or Internet connection goes down. EMU seems to be unaffected. Windows shows no conflict/sharing.

I had a similar problem when tried to install Audige 2 ZS together with SB Live. See more details here Using two soundcards

Because I did not hear any significant improvement in sound over SB Live, I sold Audigy and kept SB Live. This time I feel that EMU is far superior to SB Live. Therefore I would have to solve the problem this time. I still need a second card for TV output.

So be warned and test your system properly afterwards. You need to run all your PCI devices simultaneously for about 10-15 minutes (all sound cards, download something from Internet, etc).

I would appreciate it if you could share your results. This might help me in solving my problem.

Good luck!

Thanks dj_stick. I afraid that I have to postpone this research until I resolve problems described in my previous post

ok it sounds to me like your soundcard and modem are sharing an IRQ, move one into another PCI slot and see if that works
i myself am running two cards and a tv capture card with no problem

I thought so myself. I checked IRQ and they seems to be fine. According to System Information each device is allocated each own IRQ. I moved the modem into another slot but no success.

I have read that some poorly designed PCI devices mess up PCI bus. It is either my SB Live or my modem. I ordered an external USB modem. I hope it will fix that.

creative soundcards especially need a fair amount opf PCI bandwidth. a broadband conenction through the PCI bus could be interupting that, along with the bandwidth usage of the e-mu card i'm not all that surprised. the usb modem should help, aslong as the USB ports aren't usign the PCI bus
