recording 2 streams with a soundblaster live....

Well... first, I have to say that the KX-drivers are really great.

Now, tot the point. Lately, I have been recording my guitar

1) Through the line input of soundblaster live!
(there goes a jack from my LB120 Loadbox which is connected to my tube-amp)

2) Through the mic in of the soundblaster live!
(there goes a low-end mic which takes the grain of my 4*12 cabinet)

I know how to record via 1) OR via 2) through the AC97
but I was wondering if I could record
via 1) AND via 2) AT THE SAME TIME.

Is it possible with the soundblaster live ! and the Kx drivers ?
And, if yes, how ?

Thanks in advance for all tips and tricks.

Try selecting "stereo mix" on the AC97 page as your source. But make sure to mute everything else, otherwise you may record extra stuff (such as your WinAmp playing and whatnot).

The !SBlive cannot record from more than one source without help.

Here are some possibilities.

1.) Buy a !LiveDrive-if your SBLIve is the right type with the 40 pin AUD_EX connector on it

2.) put your inputs through a mixer, Pan CH. 1 hard left, Ch.2 hard right, the Stereo out from the mixer goes into the Line In of the SBLive and you have 2 separate mono tracks.

3.) Buy a second !SBLive, (less than $20 US from Ebay), tie the 2 cards together with an SPDIF cable. Now you have 4 Mono inputs.

4.) If you are electronically inclined, try TravelRec's project

Doug, you're wrong. SBLive can not record multiple analog sources separately, but there's no problem recording them in one stream.

Doomsayer,

So you're saying that you can simultaneously record from the MIC IN and LINE IN but you can't separate the streams? I didn't know that. You learn something every day!

I'll try that tonight with the Stereo mix selected.

Thanks,
Doug

So... If I manage somehow to record my Mic in and My Line In in a stereo mix
(hoping they get panned to the left and to the right respectively).

There is probably a way to separate the 2 streams via the DSP router, isn't it ?

That means I'll be able to record the 2 streams separately in cubase sx.
Am I wrong ?

using a mixer IS the best way, and in the DSP each channel has a seperate virtual wire in the DSP so yes you can record in seperate channels

Doomsayer wrote it absolutley correct

i was by a friend and he is using a ct4760 and we made exactly what Doomsayer wrote. from line in and mic (AC97 Stereomix) to asio0/1 was working perfect.

I just tried that :

Guitar into line in & Mic into mic in
Both through AC97 (stereo mix) into Asio0 & Asio1

and it doesn't work for me :
The guitar goes in Asio0 only but the mic goes in Asio0 & Asio1.

Well, I'm sure the guitar is mono but that may not be true of the mic.

So, my question is : is the mic of your friend mono ?
you get guitar panned to the left and mic to the right with the previous method, right ?

Anyway, i'll try to find a cheap stereo to mono 1/4" jack and try it again for it would be
the simplest way to do it.

a funy thing I noticed by playing with the stereo mix :
In the record page of the kx-drivers :
If you mute everything and play a mp3 or a midi, cubase doen't record a thing
AND
If you mute everything except gain which you set at 0 (the lowest position) and play a MP3 or a midi, cubase records the song you are playing.

Strange ? Is it a bug of the kx-drivers ?

The mic is always mono for SB Live, it just upmixes it to 2 channels. If you want your guitar AND mic go to both channels in Asio, route the AC97 Left output to both - Asio0 and Asio1.

mmmh, I don't want that. I would rather have the 2 mono streams on 2 separate mono channels.

sigh...."upmixing the mic"...... sigh........

That means I'll have to buy a 2 monojack into 1 stereo jack to plug the mic and guitar in the line in. That should do the trick as Doug W said.....

Well, this as been an education in how soundcards/AC 97 and cubase work....

Btw, there is an asio driver for multiple soundcard : "AsioKs"....but it is still in beta
(it hasn't changed for the past 9 months) and it makes my cubase crash

I wish there was ......

ONE ASIO TO RULE THEM ALL
ONE ASIO TO INSTALL
AND TO BIND THEM ALL
IN THE LAND OF CUBASE SX
WHERE THE MUSIC LIES...

(point taken dj stick)
