Noisy kX front out vs quiet ALSA front out
Both kX and Creative drivers output loud noise ( ~ -87 dB ) to front output regardless of AC97 settings.
Is it possible to remove that noise? ALSA (Linux) driver doesn't produce it. It isn't Windows-specific, as it doesn't happen if soundcard drivers are disabled. kX Info: ----Hardware / Software configuration--------------- Nazwa sterownika:kX Audio Driver (Debug) Data sterownika: Feb 17 2004 00:43:22 Wersja sterownika: 5.10.00.3537 - debug Nazwa DB:none CT4670 10k1 [d400] PCI Information: Device: 21102 Subsys: 201102 ChipRev: 4 Card has MPU device Card HAS AC97 codec Codec name: TriTech TR28023/CT1297 3D Extension: No 3D Stereo Enhancement Codec is 1.0 compliant Capabilities[0] : DAC resolutions : -16-bit- ADC resolutions : -16-bit- Ext Capabilities [0]: Port: d400 Irq: 0x10(16) Playback buffer: 1ff8 Record buffer: 4000 Number of AC3 buffers: 4 Tank memory: 1024 kb GSIF buffer: 256 samples OS version: [2 5 0 Service Pack 4; 2 5 0 Service Pack 4; 156 148] ---------------------------------------------------- ALSA info: ALSA Audio Debug v0.0.7 - śro maj 5 23:39:20 CEST 2004 http://alsa.opensrc.org/?aadebug Kernel ---------------------------------------------------- Linux uplink2 2.6.6-rc2-mm1 #4 Sat Apr 24 03:36:24 CEST 2004 i686 AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2400+ AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux Loaded Modules -------------------------------------------- snd_seq_midi 5568 - snd_emu10k1_synth 5716 - snd_emux_synth 29780 - snd_seq_virmidi 4436 - snd_seq_midi_emul 5044 - snd_emu10k1 81092 - snd_rawmidi 16640 - snd_ac97_codec 50596 - snd_util_mem 1780 - snd_hwdep 6116 - snd_seq_oss 27936 - snd_seq_device 4860 - snd_seq_midi_event 4020 - snd_seq 39216 - snd_pcm_oss 43300 - snd_pcm 66088 - snd_page_alloc 6820 - snd_timer 17188 - snd_mixer_oss 15060 - snd 34276 - Modules Conf ---------------------------------------------- # $Header: /home/cvsroot/gentoo-x86/media-sound/alsa-utils/files/alsa-modules.conf-rc,v 1.1 2003/08/05 21:07:55 johnm Exp $ alias char-major-116 snd alias char-major-14 soundcore ## You need to customise this section for your specific sound card(s) alias snd-card-0 snd-emu10k1 ## alias snd-card-1 snd-ens1371 alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0 ## alias sound-slot-1 snd-card-1 alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss ## alias sound-service-1-0 snd-mixer-oss ## alias sound-service-1-3 snd-pcm-oss ## alias sound-service-1-12 snd-pcm-oss alias /dev/mixer snd-mixer-oss alias /dev/dsp snd-pcm-oss alias /dev/midi snd-seq-oss options snd cards_limit=1 Proc Asound ----------------------------------------------- Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.4. I'm pretty sure AC97 is to blame. Try experimenting with the DSP - e.g. disconnect Prolog completely. Also, what about the rear output?

Rear output isn't noisy in both configurations.
Disconnecting everything (like cleaning DSP) doesn't help. I don't know if it's revelant, but ALSA drivers have a weird 'feature': midi is audible only on front output. Maybe there's some builtin AC97 (noisy) amplifier enabled? Front output is louder than rear in kX drivers... |
