ADAT through SPDIF connector?

Optical digital is, as far as I know, available in two flavors: 2-channel SPDIF, and 8-channel ADAT. I've read a few things that are confusing in the extreme about what applies to what (is TOSLINK a name for just the 8-channel, or both? Is SPDIF just for 2-channel?)

What I want to know is this: if I get a device that gives an 8-channel ADAT-format optical signal through a lightpipe cable, can I convert that (via simple circuitry) into a TTL-level signal, and then send it into the SPDIF input on my Live!? Will it work? Or will the SPDIF inputs only work for 2-channel SPDIF?

'Cause getting 8 channels in through a SPDIF would TOTALLY kick ass....

No, just because that needs special hardware...
(and those 8 channel extension seems to be workable only for optical interface - coaxial is to unsafe for that - but that's a different story)
well, there're more reasons :( like resampling etc.) for Live...
