Im having serious problems with controlling what input is being used for recording and what isnt...

Whenever i want to record the microphone, i have to just fiddle around with it by trial and error methods until something clicks... i mean i set the AC97 recording thing to Mic and turn the mic +boost on... and after mucking around with other random dials it eventually works...

now, when i want to record "what you hear" i cant get it to work... i select the recording input to stereo mix, but nothing changes.... when the mic is still on i can still record with the microphone even though ive selected the stereo mix...

Can anyone help me please?
Just give me a set of steps that should work... i feel like a bit of a spastic asking for this, but its pissed me off soo much over the last few days!
