Using KX driver I guess there are NO differences, as you can have 8 independent outputs with either one of those cards, so achievieng 5.1 sound in a live 4.1 is possible.

System Specs

4.1 does NOT have dolby digital, 5.1 does and has bass redirection. ive never used the Kx driver but 5.1 does have better quality if in 5.1 mode. if u have 5.1 speakers, its possible to make a 5.1 emulated sound channel, but live 5.1 gives true 5.1 i dont know what the kX driver does nor do i care

dolby digital is a software thing -- it is implemented for all the supported boards
as for the number of outputs, it depends on your connectivity option
as far as I remember, one can use all the 5.1 channels in 'digital' for -any- supported board
but the number of -analog- outputs depends on the actual number of the jacks you have

You can use both stereo outs in the 4.1 plus the 2 headphone outs in a live drive and have a 5.1 system working, just like a live 5.1 does.

k. You have an option in KX drivers to re-direct center channel plus subwoofer channel to the headphone outputs of your live drive. Get that plus the 4 channels you have through the 2 stereo outputs in the back of the live itself and there you have 5.1 sound.
