help with logic
Hi, I want to use an audigy with logic 5.5.1 on a PC. How should I install it in logic, what should my kx router and DSP routing be? The kx faq says to disable all the unused asio ins/outs to prevent latency with logic, but I'm not sure if I did that properly because it doesn't say how. The main problem I have is that I want to be able to use both of the on-board synth chips, but I can't see how to get any sound from the soundcard unless I pick GS-Wavetable output. Here is what my setup looks like now...
(Logic Prefs) [x] ASIO Driver: Kx Asio Driver Clock Source: Kx Internal Volume Smoothing ms: 50 Max Number of Audio Tracks: 24 Asio Buffer Delay: In 0 Out 0 Max IO Streams: In max Out max Process Buffer Range: small ASIO Control Panel: Device: SB0090 10k2 [9c00] Latency: 2ms (96 samples) Format: 16bit/48khz [2+2] Sync: Default (C:\WINDOWS\Win.ini) [Logic] MidiIn_kX_Control_SB0090_10k2__9c00=0 MidiIn_kX_Uart_SB0090_10k2__9c00=0 MidiIn_kX_Uart2_SB0090_10k2__9c00=0 MidiIn_E_MU_XMidi1X1__Midi_In=1 MidiOut_Microsoft_GS_Wavetable_SW_Synth=7 MidiOut_kX_Control_SB0090_10k2__9c00=0 MidiOut_kX_Synth_SB0090_10k2__9c00=7 MidiOut_kX_Synth2_SB0090_10k2__9c00=7 MidiOut_kX_Uart_SB0090_10k2__9c00=7 MidiOut_kX_Uart2_SB0090_10k2__9c00=7 MidiOut_E_MU_XMidi1X1_Midi_Out=7 |

Re: help with logic
You need to load a sound font file first. There are some on the Creative install disk called something like 8gm.sf2 or look in the synth section of this forum for links to download some of your own.

Re: help with logic
most of the setup options you'll need to take care of are within logic, not kX (other than loading a soundfont of course)
within logic's "hardware and audio drivers" preferences pane, select "drivers 2" or similiar (the second of two tabs devoted to audio hardware) make sure you enable ASIO and select the ASIO device you want to use, you can then limit logic to 2 in/2 out or however you please. once the audio drivers are set up you can use either soundfonts (via midi objects)or logic's own virtual instruments (via the audio instrument objects)

Re: help with logic
I'm getting absolutely no sound output from kx synth 1 or 2, I do have a soundfont loaded and I am setting them as the midi playback device in the windows control panel. I only get sound from the GS-wavetable softsynth. I get no sound anywhere at all from them, not even in mediaplayer. I put dsp routing to default and nothing.

Is it a GM soundfont loaded into Bank 0?

Re: help with logic
Ok I have that working now, my soundfont file was corrupted. I have a new problem though, I imported a WAV file into logic and I'm not able to hear it, it's using the asio driver for playback. Any idea what is wrong? I just switched over from using cubase so this could be something simple.
I have no idea how to see what asio outputs that logic is using for each track... but if i have software monitoring then it should be giving me this audio out of the fxbus 0 & 1 right? What are all of the fxbus outputs for? Are any of them for hardware monitoring the asio? |

Re: help with logic
Hardware monitoring has nothing to do with imported wav audio - hardware monitoring refers to ability to hear a physical input. kX By default allows for hardware monitoring. So software monitoring in DAW is not needed, its usually not desired (to minimize latency).
Which FXBus used for playback in ASIO depends on the ASIO channel used. ASIO 0/1 - uses FXBus 0/1 ASIO 6/7 - uses FXBus 6/7 Etc.. This can be changed in kX Router, I dont recommend changing kX Router as it can create confusion when asking for help, and so few people change that, as it serves little purpose most of the time for most people. Sorry, I dont use logic, so I cant help with configuration of it. But, its likely able to configure ASIO ins and outs - and each track can be assigned to what ASIO X/X to use for playback... or, you set up a bus to use ASIO X/X, then assign that bus to track(s). |

Re: help with logic
Aha ok I get it now, is there any reason why they chose fxbus 13/14 for mixing? That would mess up the outputs of asio 13/14 since theyll go thru the effect unit, why didn't they use 16/17 or 30/31 which are not shared by anything else?
I almost have everything working now, I can hear my synth chips on the soundcard, my hardware synth connected to the line-in, and my wav files imported into logic. But even though I can hear the sounds and see them moving the meter on the track mixer, I am not able to actually record that sound into a record enabled track. There must be some special little procedure to do it in logic that is different from every other daw arghh. |

Why was ASIO 13/14 used for mixing? - Thats likly your cionfiguration in Logic, I mix with FXBus 0/1,2/3,4/5, 6/7 - depending on what I am doing. Quote:

Re: help with logic
When I try to record something instead of audio I get an "alias" object, which is just an instanced version of my midi data in the audio track. I don't see anything about this in the manual and it makes no sense to me at all.

Re: help with logic
you mean like track automation information, stored as MIDI data?
Perhaps a track has multiple arming options, armed to record things like volume & pan, another for recording audio... ??? such things exist in Sonar as well. But track automatons are not stored as MIDI - or at least its not represented that way. edit: perhaps this 'alias' object is the MIDI data to drive a soft synth? /edit Do you have any links to the user manual so I can take a look? All I found was Apples Version 8 |

Re: help with logic
After spending many more hours with it I discovered the trick to making it record, the manual didn't explain how, it's fine as a reference but no good as a guide.
Do you know what the various asio sync types do? Or where I can find out about the settings under "setup buffers" and "synth compatibility" in the kX setup menu? I read somewhere that some asio inputs in kX have problems and you shouldn't use them, or they don't work properly in stereo? Do you know anything about that?
