need help in vmware--vitual machine

i installed kx driver in the host system-win2000. and i also installed a virtual machine--vmware (a latest version). after i set up win98 in the vmware, i couldn't find out a way to make a sound, this also happened with knoppix--linux. any idea?

Instal the vmware tools in the virtual system, that includes the sounddriver for the emulated sb-16 in the vm... (IF you added that to the virtual machines hardware that is)

in the same hardware tab, you can tell VMware, wich audio out to use (standard, if kX is the only driver, this would be wave 0/1, or wavemapper, wich is the correct setting)

but unfortunately, it doesn't work. as you said,kx driver is the only driver ,so, i tried the other options,ie 0/1,4/5,,and the default host sound adapter.but made no difference. i noticed "?PCI Multimedia Audio Decice "in the device manager, so, i tried to install a driver, whatever kx driver or creative drive, failed.

I also noticed this:
If your host operating system is configured for sound, you can enable sound for a virtual machine. Currently PCM (pulse code modulation) sound output and sound input are supported. That is, VMware Workstation supports any application that produces sound without using MIDI. Synthesizer sound output, game controllers and joysticks are not supported.

The virtual sound device is compatible with a Creative Technology Sound Blaster 16 audio device. It supports sound in Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003 and Linux guest operating systems

so,maybe it only works with creative driver,how sad

No, as I said, the Virtual Machine needs an sb-16 (soundblaster 16) driver, wich is installed if you install the vmware tools INSIDE the virtual machine... (or use an original sb-16 driver)
You can NOT install kX or any other drivers INSIDE the virtual machine, cause it's a virtual machine... it has no real hardware (and as such, needs special drivers)

so, to get sound, install an sb-16 driver (that will install a driver for that "multimedia audio device")
on linux, "modprobe es1371" or "modprobe sb" or something similar (don't know the exact driver needer, my best guess is the es1371 one, cause that's a pci thing)
