Ok, give us some more info to work with, and we will see if we can help you track down the problem.
What version of kX are you using?
What model sound card do you have?
How is your MIC connected to the system? i.e.
Is it connected to the MIC input on the rear of the card, or is it connected to a Drive Bay input, etc?
Double check the connection to verify that it is in the correct jack, and is fully inserted, etc.
In what way does it not work? i.e.
Cannot record, cannot hear MIC input, or both, etc.

Start with the following:
In the DSP window: Right click and choose 'Reinitialize DSP' from the menu.
In kX Mixer, AC97 page: Click on the 'Reset AC97' Button.
Unmute the 'MIC In' slider (click on the little circle under the slider so that the level reads '0' instead of 'inF').
Try speaking into the MIC. You should be able to hear it in the front speakers. You can also boost the MIC signal by enabling the +20 dB MIC Boost option (on the same page).
Let us know if that works for you.

Russ your above worked and I could hear my own voice over the speakers, however when i try and use my microphone to speak to someone over such things as skype/msn it does not pick up any sound, even thuogh I can hear my voice.

The above instructions were just a starting point, to see if F-ame could get his MIC working at all. For VOIP applications, you need to setup your MIC for recording.
Unmute the 'AC97 Rec Level' slider on the Recording page of kxmixer.
Select MIC as the AC97 source in the dropdown box on the AC97 page of kxmixer.
Adjust the Recording Gain slider as necessary.
That is basic instructions to get it working (sorry, I gotta go eat dinner). For more detailed instructions, refer to the links I posted previously, or search the forum.

Mute the 'AC97 In' slider on the 'Ins and Outs' page of kxmixer, and mute the 'MIC In' slider on the 'AC97' page of kxmixer.
