Big Grin Bring on GSIF for GigaStudio160! You'll rule the Universe!!!!!

Now that ASIO finally an inexpensive reality there’s no need to stop there. I am looking into what I would like to be able to do in this project studio and I want to build a dedicated GigaStudio Box, (at least until GigaStudio is a true VSTi with low overhead). It would make these drivers a PERFECT, inexpensive solution for offloading that process to a totally different workstation instead of trying to run it at the same time as the host app.

I know Halion is an option for Giga format CDs but I don’t like how Halion imports the Giga instruments and there really isn’t much available in Halion format.

So bring on the GSIF driver support so I can have the system ready and tested long before Quantum Leap releases the HUGE Symphonic Orchestra.

B.T.W. I love you guys! Anyone that can save me hundreds of $$$ can’t be bad!

I am about to try some GIGA samples in Halion. Should I avoid using them with Halion? I havn't had any problems importing AKAI samples.

I have used HALion with AKAI samples extensively and I _love_ it.

Cheers

rolleyes

HALion has to trnslate GIGS of files before it will work with Giga CDs, and even then it doesn't always map the layers properly.

I've heard all the hype about Kontakt but frankly any sampler is fine for creatind my OWN sample libraries... even HALion. The problem is that the absolute BEST sample libraries exist in Giga format. So regardless of the application polyphony and layer potential (even HALion), the application MUST read Giga format perfectly...

Does NI Kontakt?

It would be better if Tascam quickly finishes GigaStudio v3. AND FAST!!!!!!

I just want to know if there are plans in the works for GSIF support? I like HALion, but not all of the samples convert properly. I just want to go ahead and use the actual GigaStudio application and stop coverting.

Halion is ok. Kontakt is great! Really twekable and very friendly. It's ok for most of the things. There is one drawback though. Try to load some hi quality samples in kontakt, for example a piano (gigapiano or Bosendorfer piano) and a set of naturally sounding drums (files >1 GB) and try to make them play. No way! You'll get an awfull sound with pops, clicks and noise of every kind independent from the asio driver. Not to mention that your system will hang for half an hour till the samples are loaded.

Gigastudio on the other hand has less tweaking options for the instruments, but it plays whatever sample u load in it very smoothly and with a perfect sound. It's got a disk streaming system way more advanced than the ones used by other soft samplers. Also don't forget there is an upcoming 3 version that is likely to be much better than the existing one.

I'm using Kontakt for now and although it's a really nice piece of software, when it comes to big samples it causes me a real trouble.

If you ask me, it's definitely worth implementing GSIF into kX.

Good news - YES!

Q. Will there be GSIF support?
A. GSIF isn't an open standard (which anybody can follow), but after negotiating with Nemesys/Tascam, we finally got the GSIF specification (under an NDA) and we are currently investigating the ways of supporting GigaSampler. We cannot provide any release dates at the moment.

Tascam! These guys must be crazy! They are already losing their stranglehold on the sampler world from other applications that are memory - vst - host compatible. It would be to their advantage to allow ANY hardware developer support their specification. The best way to stick around is to make GigaStudio an attractive option (lower cost) and encourage the use of GSIF every chance they get. I understand they are trying to protect their format so that other software samplers don't take over as the leading soft-sampler application.

They are already well on their way to losing their spot because there are VST options that read Giga samples and the biggest and BEST sample libraries are NOT being created GIG format. Wake Up Nemesys!
