5.1 support on a 4760

I know that technically there are a few differences that would make the older (non 5.1) sbLives not really work well as a 5.1 card. But is it possible (theoretically at least) to have the kX driver treat the older card as a sb live 5.1? From what I've read the major difference in actual PCI device detection lies within one chip that holds the ID, along with the main chip as well. A standard 4760 supposedly will output the Center/Sub on a Spdif and from there it could be converted if you really wanted too, with an external device. Just an idea, or at least could someone tell me how to spoof the PCI ID to the system or driver (similar to the NvStrap driver for Geforce/Quatro cards)

Just wondering

I really like to mess with stuff, but I don't just do recording and such, I play games as well, and movies... and just about anything else!

kX does not care is you card 5.1 or Not. E.g. you can route subwoofer/center to any other outputs you can use (e.g. spdif out). kX treats all cards in same maner: "PCI sound card with several independent outputs". But you should undestand that kX is not meant to be "the center of your digital entertaiment"... So kX allows you to (for example) get 8 independent (e.g. including true 5.1 mix) channels from Cubase, but with games you get only Stereo, since there's no EAX or DirectSound3D (whatever card you use 5.1 or not)

Also, if you are really brave and think its worth the effort, you could mod your sblive into a 5.1 model... Check http://www.digit-life.com/articles/l...e51/index.html

But you get only 4 speakers on speaker test, right?

thanks for your reply.

I realize it's not going to do everything I'd ever want. Like I said, I like to "tinker" with stuff to see what I can do really. I attempted to get output from the center/subwoofer channels but never recieved any type of signal spdif settings or not. Perhaps there is other configuring I need to do that I haven't realized. Right now I've tried with WinDVD in spdif output and 5.1 setups. Niether have produced any sound on the the two before mentioned channels.

I considered doing the modification, but the result really isn't worth the work. (besides both my realtek cards are being used on my server) I've messed with a lot of settings but have yet to get any output. Just out of curiousity, is it possible to have the speaker test show the center and rear test speakers? At least so I can see if the routing is working. Obviously what I'm mostly concerned with is AC3/5.1 kind of sound. I do recording as well, but I don't have any issues with the kX driver doing that (it really is a great driver guys, great job!)

Like a few others, I'm just looking to make a sort of multimedia/theater use out of my pc while I'm still broke. (military doesn't pay much)

Thanks for the replys everyone.
