Far Cry 2 (PC) Review @ GH

Read The Review Here
________________________

Far Cry was one of my favourite first person shooter games of all time, so when I heard that a new team were making the 'follow-up', my heart sank. Ubisoft Montreal are responsible for the sequel and it shares absolutely nothing in common with the original classic of a few years ago. Yes, rest in peace Jack Carver.

Re: Far Cry 2 (PC) Review @ GH

While I like the review and I still believe that this is a very good FPS game, I am dissapointed that (as probably all other professional reviews) there is nothing about the DRM used and the online activation required no matter which PC version you buy.
Other than that, great review.

Good review. I also like the game, but can confirm the AI issues cited. It also shouldn't carry hte Far Cry name, it's totally unrelated. Ubisoft may have missed the mark with this and lost a very good opportunity to add another great franchise to their books.

I also don't understand why they decided to go with the 'Far Cry' name...has absolutely nothing to do with any of the characters, locations or situations associated with Far Cry

I guess it's marketing. They took something that is established and built off that. It did create hype, anticipation and wide coverage didn't it?

I agree with VG about the franchise. Maybe a storyline mash-up in the future?

What do you think the review should have said about DRM?

That it installs crapware. That it requires online activation, that there is a limited number of activations available and that if something goes wrong for whatever reason you lose one of them. That although the game is sold at retail as DVD and it is not an multiplayer only or mainly, game, that if whenever for whatever reasons, after some X time, the servers are not available you won't be able to install/play the game even if you just want to play single player.
You know, all the usual that goes with the specific DRM in question. To warn or if you prefer, inform potential customers and gamers that read the review.
The score wouldn't need to change.

Re: Far Cry 2 (PC) Review @ GH

I appreciate your views on this. Personally however my outlook is that we review the game, not the installation methods or security involved with it. We normally release press releases in our news sections and there is discussion on our forums about those things (as there is in this case already).

Also sometimes we get games direct from the publishers long before release and they don't have the protection methods so its very difficult for us to know until its released (sometimes after the reviews are published).

Re: Far Cry 2 (PC) Review @ GH

Not everyone reads the forums, just the news and reviews. DRM should IMHO be at least mentioned in the review, because potential buyers should be aware of it.

Can we get this thread back to the game and review please, this won't be changing.

Fair enough.

To anyone that has played the game, how are headshots count? One shot, no matter what the weapon, and the enemy is down for good, or the more liberal approach that some other FPS take?

Re: Far Cry 2 (PC) Review @ GH

I believe every shot to the head means instant death.

But it's odd, using M249 somtimes after two or three hits, the enemy falls down, gets up, pulls the sidearm and tries to shoot you.

I guess after two or three hits from a LMG you should be dead, or am I wrong?

sounds like a decent game, even if it isn't really a sequel - i might pick it up when it gets a bit cheaper

just in case anyone was interested...I decided to uninstall Far Cry 2 as a test to see if it would 'revoke' my activation (free it up to use again without using up an activation)...things worked fine!!...if you uninstall the game using the proper uninstall method then a screen pops up asking if you want to revoke the activation to use on another machine...click 'Yes' and there you go...no worries about a limited number of installs

I wish all activation was this easy and painless...doesn't hurt legit customers and gives them an easy way to reinstall the game as many times as you want

Re: Far Cry 2 (PC) Review @ GH

Great review focusing on the storyline and game mechanics rather than so much on the technical requirements.

Along with Spore, this is one I have my eye on, thanks!

BTW,
"Even though the AI is impressive, it isn't perfect. I noticed on more than one occasion soldiers standing still like mannequins or enemies running right past me apparently in need of a bathroom break."

Heh, I can use a little of that anyways...
