Next Gen Console War: Report 3 @ Firingsquad
Source: Firingsquad
_______________
Every three months or so we have taken a look at the current battle between Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony as they all try to win the next-gen game console war with their Xbox 360, Wii and PS3 devices, respectively. With the fall/holiday shopping season now in full force its time to give our third report on the front lines of the war in 2007. It's been an interesting campaign on the front lines since our last report on May 22. Some things have gone as we have expected and some things have happened that came out of left field. However this current console war is still not over and this fall still looks to be the crux point of the war between the gaming console juggernauts. We will now look at what each console has done in the last few months and predict what might happen this fall.

the wii is not a "next generation" console. There should be a stipulation of at least HD graphics support for this. and yes before the nintendo lovers flame me, im aware the controller could be classed as next generation, however ive had a similar gyro device for my PC for well over a year now !

Are they going to keep calling this generation "next generation" until the next generation is released?

Upcoming first party games like Project Gotham Racing 3 and especially BioWare's long awaited sci-fi RPG Mass Effect should also help the 360 console sales
Yup can't wait to get my hands on that Upcoming PGR3

I'm really REALLY hoping that at the very least, a 480p Wii will be available at some point.. i mean the orginal gamecubes had 480p support out of the box.. aside from missing the digital cable...
but i'm betting nintendo is getting a good stranglehold on the market again before dumping a considerable amount into a damn good console again.

nintendo always release good games, i just really have an issue with it being called a "next generation console" (although to be honest im sick of this terminology a long time ago, its overplayed and needs to stop) with SD graphics based on previous console technology. Yet if you bring the subject up with a nintendo gamer, the instant defense is "it doesnt need high definition graphics!". I am thankful in a way however, most of them don't game on a PC, as if this was the case we would probably all still be gaming at 640x480 on hardware designed a decade ago.
Good games don't need great graphics? of course they don't, but I want both and I think most of the demanding PC enthusiast market is the same. Which rocks.

Yeah wasnt a dig at the site as such, just amused me thats all. I'm easily pleased. Firingsquad have a very helpful active forum and are one of the better techsites out there.
PGR4 is shaping up nice though, adding motorbikes to the mix is going to make for some fun online gaming.

It already is, Wii supports 480P through component cable out of the box, well cable is not included in the box, but ya get the picture!

hmmm..
didn't know that.
but i still would want 1080p to drool over Metroid Prime 3..
Could you imagine Gears of War/Bioshock graphics and detail for Metroid Prime 3?
I mean Mp3 has some pretty damn impresive graphics already considering the aged graphics chip in use..... but damn...
I'm in the camp where i'll play a game @ 320x240 if it's bloody fun, but i'll always long for much much better graphics all the time.
I recently sat down and had a run @ gear of war finally, my gaud that's a thoroughly enjoyable game, BEST played in co-op mode..... Plus nothing like playing the damn thing @ 1080p on a 52" 10,000:1 Contrast ratio Samsung LCD HDTV...... Damn bwute of a tv....

Actually just looking recently...
might have this model on it's way down later this week for a floor show display...
SAMSUNG's Digital World - TV | LN_T5281F
i think 500,000:1 contrast ratio may be a little over exagerated..
actually screw that...
i didn't realize this model had come out..
120hz ftw!

I had noticed actually that Hertz has became the latest bigger must be better number on TV sets. It struck me when I was out at the weekend that quite a few displays were displaying 100hz in big garish letters. I'm guessing this is going to be the new LCD gimmick now most manufacturers have 1080p sets on the market. Oh when will it all end (actually I can answer that......when the general public loses the sheep mentality and accepts that what they have is more than suitable for purpose).

Seriously, the whole doubled Hz (refreshrate) and also doubling the frame rate has huge potential...
And there was a huge article about this quite some time ago PROVING it's a major possitive..
if i can get down that 25000:1 samsung model... i'll let you know what it looks like compared to the other models i've used previously.
