HD-DVD gets European price cut
Source: Gamesindustry
_______________
The consortium responsible for the HD-DVD format have named the Xbox 360 add-on as one of a handful of players that will experience a slight dip in price throughout mainland Europe.
The news was confirmed at the IFA (Internationale Funkausstellung) consumer electronics fair in Germany, where the new price was announced at EUR 179 - a 20 Euro saving on the original cost.
However, the announcement didn't come from Microsoft itself, which is yet to give its official take. That may include an update on the UK price, but, again, this is far from confirmed.Expect an update in the coming days.

Of note, the price got cut on the players here too. The cheapest player can be had for $299, down from $399 a month ago, and $499 a month before that.
I wouldn't count Toshiba and HD-DVD out just yet.

Nope not at all!
If anything the war is right in the middle and this Christmas we should know more on who's the real winner!
I still know HD-DVD will win.

And what makes you think that this will be decided by Christmas? Do you really think that all the studios that support Blu-ray will just decide to drop it? Warner won't even make that move now that they are on the Board of Directors for Blu-ray. It will take more than some chump change for them to switch.

Agreed. If anything I'd say that this time next year we should see a more 'clearer' picture of which will 'win'. However, the more frightful prospect is that we could very well have 2 standards by next Christmas, or that this 'war' will continue for the next 2 years.
Know what? That's just fine by me. I find it interesting to hear both sides bitch about how dragging this format war on, and on for so long is hurting the consumers, and frankly, those guys are just full of $4!7. If anything this is a benefit to us. The more they fight, the more one side will try to do something to win over consumers. They'll do that by offering cheaper players, and eventually cheaper discs. Sure, early adopters are going to get hit hard if and when one side dies, but not the rest of us average guys who know to wait, at least until the smoke clears, and we get a better idea of who will win.
Until then.. let the war continue!

In Japan blu-ray pretty much dominates unlike in the USA. It's possible we may have a situation where we countries predominately blu ray and others hd-dvd. What happens then? Studios will probably have to release in one format in one country and the other format in other countries.

Well it's a mess and I agree with that.
I did not mean to make it seem like this Christmas will be the end but it will show what one was picked up faster at the mass market. Blu-ray is only winning now because of the PS3 and if the PS3 did not have a blu-ray player in it the war would have already been over.
It's only going to be a matter of time before HD-DVD takes the lead due to lower priced players! Gamers are not movie watchers and the attach rates suck at the moment for blu-ray.
They have about a 10:1 on hardware and only can pull a 2:1 in movie sales? They always use that as a advantage but really at how I look at it HD-DVD is winning and by the time 2008 rolls around I am 90% sure HD-DVD will start to pull ahead.

I believe it's because no one wants to have invested in a format which will eventually become kaputt in the not so distant future. You can blame both toshiba and co and the BDA for this mess and for all the flame posts which have been infecting video forums around the net. It is now simply impossible to go on sites like avs and not read some stupid comment on how their format is best and going to win.

I think by the time the dust settles in this optical media war digital distribution will have gained enough momentum that optical media will be obsolete aside from using it as back-up.
90% of my games, music, software, tv shows and movies are downloaded as it is.
