MMORPG players not socially introverted, says study

Source: Gamesindustry
______________
new study by researchers at Nottingham Trent University, published in the US journal CyberPsychology and Behavior, dispels the myth that online gamers are asocial.

“This study has revealed many aspects of MMORPGs that were not known before," said Nottingham Trent University professor Mark Griffiths. "Previous research has suggested that gamers are socially inactive, but MMORPGs are actually extremely social games, with high percentages of gamers making life-long friends and even partners.”

I'm sorry, I don't consider a series of shallow encounters with people over the internet 'social'.

These are people afraid of the real world, hiding in a virtual world with other people afraid of the real world, creating a little clic of anti-social people. Spinning this any other way means you've left yourself ignorant to the big picture.

Person-to-person communication still rules the world. MMO's do not help you build the kinds of communication skills necessary to command an interview or an unfamiliar social event.

I'm sure you've seen them at a party before. They're the guys that stick to the corner for a while, then find the TV and start playing video games.
