Bungie Studios has released an online FAQ offering insight into the upcoming Halo 3 beta test for the Xbox 360, specifically indicating that “thousands” are expected to take part, and that players can expect “a few surprises.”

Unlike other beta tests, the Halo 3 will not be rolled out in phases. Instead, all players from the first two invite only alpha tests will participate simultaneously with those taking part in the beta, a move that is expected to create a beta test community numbering the thousands.
