Radeon 9700 Pro, BF1942 and stuttering

Hi!

Since I upgraded to DirectX 9 I've had stuttering and lots of other performance problems, but one game is totally messed up and that is BF1942. It stutters like hell, and it gets worse when you've played a while. Since this game hasn't been that much mentioned on various forums and I use it as my primary testgame when I try to resolve my current issues w/ stuttering, I started this thread to see if you other ppl might have experienced similar problems.

I've tried everything to resolve this. DX9 together w/ Cat3.0, Omegadrives mixed drivers and Cat2.5. Stuttering remains. I've tried to lower the hardware acceleration under troubleshooting and nothing gets better. I've disabled/re-enabled and then disabled AGP Fast Writes in BIOS and SMARTGART. I've tried to disable the second display for the card under devices.

Things I haven't tried so far is:

1) switch AGP Aperture size in BIOS (dont think it would matter though... have it set to default atm, 64MB)

2) Reinstalling Omegadrives driverkit w/o uninstalling Cat2.5 first... (although I find it hard to believe that it would resolve my issue better than Cat2.5 other than better compability w/ DX9 perhaps)

3) Reinstalling DX9 from the SDK package instead.

I've also heard that this issue might be related to WinXPs SP-1. I have it preinstalled on my installation CD sadly.

Someone mentioned something about OfficeXP as well, dunno what it was... Have it installed though...

Since english ain't my native I just figured that 'stuttering' is my problem. Just to make sure I'll try to explain in words what it is I experience, and maybe some kind soul can enlighten me on whether it's the right term to use in for this issue or not.

My 'stuttering' is that although games run w/ great FPSs it still feels like machine can't handle the graphics. Mouse movements aren't smooth. Its the same for OpenGL applications as well as DX, but worse in DX.

I'd really appreciate suggestions. Running out of options here.

What a great experience! Paying $400 for a new card, and then find out that my old Geforce2 GTS/Pro does the job smoother.

Make sure you have the latest BF1942 patch installed and turn off hardware accel. in the sound options. Also please do a clean install of the latest Omega drivers. NEVER install a new driver over an older one. There's a guide in the driver forum to help you get a nice clean install. Hope it helps

Thx for reply, I've already disabled hardware acceleration under the sounds tab though.

I read some thread earlier that Omegadrive actually recommends against uninstalling old drivers and that you should install his over the old ones...

Update: I just noticed that most (but not all) stutters are gone if I completely disable sounds.... does this tell for a problem w/ my soundcard drivers?

I'd say your correct - a friend of mine had horrid stutters with BF1942 until he upgraded his SB Live! drivers to the latest ones

Having fastwrites enabled cleared up alot of my stutter problems. Maybe you'd wanna try that??

Yeah, but I never had any problems w/ BF1942 using this soundcard (SB Audigy Plat.) before DX9. It must be something introduced in DX9 thus, but I havent read anything related to this on any forums... Really weird.

True, and thx for tip. I've tried both though, back using it enabled atm.

I've come to the conclusion that it must be more than one problem I'm having, although both probably introduced w/ DX9. One is soundcard related and the other related to Catalyst. This must be why I can't notice any difference when trouble-seeking.

Getting pretty tiresome this is...

Anyways, please continue replying. I really appreciate it.
