Quake 4 discussion thread.
Quite a few threads popping up for this great new FPS, I thought it would be easier to centralise everything in a sticky thread for a while.
SO discuss, everyone else loving this or is it just me ?

thanks to bloodys for this
Here is a complete list of all 357 console commands in Quake 4 and of all 837 parameters in the game you can play with, along with short descriptions for most of them. Very useful if you want to get the most out of Quake 4 and have some time to experiment

w00t! to ID and Raven i believe it is, for makin a nice runnin nice lookin, nice story line, beaut of a game! Thou i kinda give me the impression that Doom3 was a hurried release to compete the market with HL2 at the time, Since we all know who ID software is and what Doom3 is ya know peepes are gonna want it. and if HL2 was ready surly Doom 3 must be too!! ya know, that kinda thing, but what ever what not, Q4 is still nice and refreshing for the engine and should revive hope for future releases with it!

The graphics are gorgeous, and the audio is good too, but thankfully the gameplay is the most important part. I wish I had more time to get really stuck into this title. hopefully at the weekend I can put in some hours.
Also guys, I know quite a few of you are warezing this, but please if you like it, consider paying for it = im sure most of you agree its worth it. we need to reward companies like this by giving them the money, it also funds future titles remember that.

The voices seem ok to me.. I am using a Fort III 7.1 with a 5.1 setup..
It says it doesn't support open AL so I dunno if it is running software mode or what.. It sounds awesome though.
I might try to enable some of the EAX options and see what happens.

Also put this in your autoexec.cfg everyone.. it looks cool and doesn't seem to kill FPS too much:
g_showPlayerShadow "1"

open your Quake4 icon Properties box, and in the Target box add "+set com_allowconsole 1 +disconnect" (without quotes) one space after the last character in the box and click OK. Now when you launch Quake4, you will skip the starting movies and you can access the console by pressing the ~ key. The full Quake4 Tweak Guide will come within the next week or two.

It seems the multiplayer is an add on.
Single player looks nice but Quake is known for th emultiplayer, so where did it go?

single player is fun...but it took awhile for it to really get going...Level 7-Canyon is when the action really turns up a notch and I started to get really impressed...before that it seemed too much like Doom 3, with the radio transmissions, dark indoor levels etc....I thought for a minute that some PDA's might show up...

Thanks for the shadow option!
Don't try OpenAL if your driver does not support it. I tried and it crashed instantly and unfortunately the lack of Safe Mode will not let you go back normally and fix the problem. I had to go into the .cfg file and disable it manually.
I recommend everyone visit Tweak Guides site and look at the Doom 3 guide for some very nice tweaks.
Update:
I just tried Q4 with OpenAL. One word: fantastic! Must try for all!

OpenAL is a 3D audio API like OpenGL is for video. As of Sept.21.05 Creative released beta drivers for all their Audigy line of cards that include support for OpenAL. You can download them right off of Creatives Soundblaster site under "Support".

I am very impressed with Q4. I like it a bit more than FEAR.

You know its not often I say this but I think Quake 4 is absolutely brilliant. I have been totally surprised by just how playable this game is. I think I read someone saying it reminded them of Halo in parts, it really does, especially the HUGE landing ship on one of the earlier levels. I was NOT expecting this huge ship to land, it puts the landing ship in halo to shame, its about 5 times the size and it all flows so smoothly. The landing struts extending as it landed, the particle and smoke effects as it touched down, the noise, and the ship spotlights on the underchassis. I replayed that level 3 times to watch the ship land !
Anyone reading this who is unsure of getting quake4, put Doom3 out of your head right now, the similarities end right with the engine. A super playable, highly polished glorious FPS..
its a modern day masterpiece
