awsome game. period.
way and i mean way better optimized than fear could ever hope to be.
solid fluid fps gameplay. DOOM 3 wishes it could be as good.
fear was a great game dont get me wrong i was totaly blown away at how quake 4 is way better than this fear. i wasnt expecting this turn around.
great game period.
and btw there are nodvd/cd cracks that turn off the calling home shit lol
i purchased fear but now that i just cant stand the stuttering in fear im going to take it to the shop tommorow and swap it for QUAKE 4.

I totally agree, I mean have you guys seen all the little touches in this? the way the vehicles cause dust to blow up on certain levels, and on the cold level, when the guys spoke the breath coming out of their mouths? the more I play this the more im impressed, I havent even touched the MP yet, but the single player is a total masterpiece, the texture quality rates up there with the best ive seen to date, the body armour, the facial expressions, the lighting (which is stellar). I mean the weapons not only look incredible but the sound they create is amazing.
It is one of the best FPS ever made, I agree with BWX, and im just so happy to look back at Doom3 when I prayed that someone made a good game of the amazing engine. this could well be the game of the year.

COD 2 doesnt have crap on Quake 4. Think of it this way, COD 2 isnt going to have every mod developer and there mother running to make a mod for it.

Yes you should be able to, the Q4 engine is improved over Doom3's. I have had great experiences with last gen hardware in my testing (although the 7800GTX with this game is just mindblowingly good )
you may want to pass on ultra quality though, the only card ive found that gives non stutter free playback is the 7800GTX. (looking forward to playing ultra on the 512meg version soon).

I play Q4 on 1152 x 864, 2xAA, 4xAF- all options on max but no ultra quality..
I get between 35 and 60fps.. hovering somewhere in between most of the time.. around 45 or higher.
Even if it occasionally drops below 30FPS, it doesn't stutter AT ALL and is still very smooth..
I never ran D3 on this X800XL yet... so can't compare it to my 9700pro.
(X800XL @ 420/540 though- AI on normal.... 5.10 CCC AA and AF on app. pref. - control AA and AF through game.)

Ya you'll run it fine pimpsta...
I'm happy though. 1280x1024 high quality (so 8xaf), no aa (doesn't really require it to be honest...) and rest cranked up!!!

Wicked Fun!
Raven knocked this one out of the park, it is a BLAST!
It does have a similar feel in places to the Elite Force games (also by Raven), but it is far, far better. I love it!

Ok, question...
The only quake game I ever played for more than 30mins in Quake 1. Is this game like that at all or not? I never got into quake 2 and don't play games online, so quake3 is sort of off limits. Quake 1 had some great creatures and the level design was great, atmosphere was very dark and natural, which I liked.

Well sure the game is full of little details and that's something I would expect from Raven and the engine they used. But the game played to much like Doom3. And the engine scaling well I can't run the game @ the resolution your playing it with my system (look at sig)
But this game did get me thinking of finally upgrading my system
I have to agree on the Sound in the game it's great even the radio messages you get while playing, sometimes you can't even understand them because of the shooting .. Also the interaction with some of the other soldiers is nice to get some interesting info / stories they tell you.. And yes the lightning effects are great (but wasn't that what the Doom3 Engine was all about ? incl the shadows that come with it)
As far as the facial expressions well they are not the best I have seen in games but they look amazing that's for sure.. But the gameplay feels way off imho. Sure like I said before the GFX can be nice but the gameplay really doesn't look like your invading the Strog planet. I mean I expected much more shooting and better AI for a setting like this..
But then again it's just how I feel about this, and as before it's not a bad game I did enjoy it while playing it but maybe I had to much expectations. And they could have done some more with the in game physics they aren't used as much as I would have liked

Man I couldnt disagree more, Quake 4 plays NOTHING like Doom3, Doom3 I HATED, it was boring after the initial "wow" factor - I mean anyone who knows me here will know I slated Doom3 after it was released for many months saying it was basically a graphics demo. How are they different? Quake has a team, and a much more coherant, believable and fully rounded story line, if you look past the engine which is about all Doom3 and Quake4 share you can even feel the differences when playing. I mean you have not only indoor scenes but you have outdoor scenes, you have vehicles... it has a much more "open" feeling and you arent running around inane coridoors waiting for the next mindless zombie to jump out and go "argggh".......
Also something else I noted which was a massive fault of F.E.A.R. was the total lack of anything memorable (apart from the ending), the whole Quake 4 experience has been amazing to the point ive been playing, I remember EVERY level and even the design is first class _ there are so many great touches I would love to start naming them but people are reading this who havent played it yet so it would spoil their experience. Who on earth can remember anything about Doom3 apart from some of the bosses??
I think they play totally differently, thank god or I would have deinstalled it a long time ago. Quake 4 is a classic, Doom3 is a turkey with a lovely engine.

r_displayRefresh "75"
g_showPlayerShadow "1"
seta image_anisotropy "4"
seta in_toggleZoom "1"
seta com_showFPS "0"
seta s_useEAXOcclusion "1"
seta s_useEAXReverb "1"
My autoexec.cfg so far- makes it easier to adjust things you want to experiment with..
EAX seems to work great.

First fps game in a long while that is fun to play. Wasn't expecting much and got sucker punched with glee halfway through the first level. My LCD's native resolution is 16x12 so I was worried that I would have to turn some detail settings down but the only thing i shut down was aa but at 1600 there doesn't seem much need for that anyway. It runs between 40 and 65 at the "quality" setting. Good coding Raven! Great gaming experience. You should not miss this one folks

I think that the coolest part in that game is the whole medical scritped scene. I would post screenshots but I don' t want to ruin it.

Quake 4 rocks big time! I played up till you get to ride a conveyor belt from hell ( I won't go into details ) in one session.
The next day I installed FEAR and started to get into that.. B>O>R>I>N>G> ! .... endless catwalks and empty hallways with no action. Yawn.. Once the firefights start in FEAR its cool.. but the time between battles is too long. Q4 has action and WOW moments every turn it seems. I would have assumed FEAR > Q4 but as Z pointed out, its the opposite.
I picked up Serious Sam2 for $30 but havn't even bothered to install it at this point. Maybe next month.

EDIT: Didn't say anything...
And well, The best thing about quake, I mean THE best is that it ain't repetitive.
The first few levels are so diverse. That's what i love in a game and this is just amazing. Only HL2 and JKs were this diverse and fun (and farcry)
PS: Those last screens phatom posted... I'm just past that

Just wait Sandok, the game is about to become almost un-nonplayable (you will not be able to put it down) in about another hour of gameplay! I just wish Doom3 was even half as much fun.
