Quake 4 problem!!!
I bought the CD version of the game today and am having major problems installing it....
first my Kaspersky anti-virus recognizes the game as a virus....so fine...I just disable the anti-virus and continue on with the installation...next thing when it gets to CD 4 an error message pops up saying..
Error 1305: error reading from file D:\setup\data\q4base\pak008.pk4. verify that the file exists and that you can access it
I tried putting in all 4 of the CD's and none of them work...I looked around some Quake 4 forums and it seems a lot of people are experiencing the exact same or similar problems...what the heck is going on?

eh? crazy i didnt even know it was out, u can try different drives but, if its widespread its prolly not yer drive, maybe try to copy the contents of the cd on to the hard drive first then run from there, that is if ya have ample drive space, or maybe theres a bad batch of the game or sumthin

Appears to be a Quality Assurance problem. F.E.A.R. owners are pretty ticked as well with SecureRom interfering with their fun. How ironic that the anti-piracy techniques are locking out the legit users, while the others are circumventing with relative ease.
I would suspect that Activision will supply a patch soon.

There was a game not too long ago which had a similar problem and the developer/publisher did something to fix it. I'm not sure what game it was, but I do recall installation problems with it.

Dont worry, once you get it installed your anti-virus is going to go nuts. Atleast *from what i've been told* the quake4.exe has some worm in it that calls home. People are blocking all ID ip's at the host level. IT seems that they REALLY wanted to try and catch people warezing the game.
This just goes to show that game companys hurt legit customers. You dont see people getting *release* versions having problems? Its becuase they are useing a untainted form of the exe. MY friend bought the DVD version of the game (60$) and had a similar problem to what you had. Try cloneing the data off of those bad boys and then installing it. Use yer original CD to play the game, but there is a good chance that in ripping the data that you will be able to install it with out problems.
I cant stress this enough, USE YER HOST FILE TO BLOCK THE EXE!

Well, if there really is a worm somehow bundeld into the disk, would you wanting it making contact with whoever made it? I've just heard of to many people having cook'y problems with quake 4 to not warn everyone.

This might be of some use....
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Host_file
As for which IP's to block, I dont know as I dont have the game. I'll see if I can get ahold of my friend and see if he has blocked his.

Try copying all the files to you hard driver from that CD. If the copy
goes off with out a hitch we will take it from there and I can tell you
how to make it a single CD / dvd version. Well if can be made on most
will support it. you just need to send me screen shots of what files are
in the cds root ie (d:\)
Side note regarding copy protection:
It sad really It already cracked and being shared
anti copy protection does 3 magor things:
* doesnt prevent copying
* doesn't reduce piracy
* Couses problems with legit users
Seriously even the legit users sometime revert to the NOCD
(crack copy protection versions) of the main exe so they can
play the game they legally purched. thatS pretty sad!....

I think he is talking about this.
Open the hosts file located at:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc
Add this line:
127.0.0.1 q4master.idsoftware.com

Problem Solved!!!
I went back to my local GameSpot store where I bought the game and the guy exchanged my CD copy for another CD version of the game...I got home, prayed and then installed the newly exchanged CD copy of the game...installation went through without any problems at all
Conclusion: there is definitely a bad patch of CD's that were sent out of the game...shame on Activision for letting this happen!!...if you buy the CD version of the game and experience similiar problems make sure to get an exchange...now that the nightmare is over I can finally get around to playing Q4--24 hours later then I had planned!!!

From what ive played this feels a hell of a lot more enjoyable than Doom3 even though it "looks" like it. the whole game seems more free flowing and open, and runs brilliant. Im impressed so far
