Crackling/Static Sound With BF2
I'm getting some crackling/static sounds while playing BF2. I have onboard sound. I currently have the game settings to "software" and "low". All other game sounds are fine. Just wondering if this is a game issue or time to buy a sound card.... thanks

I have an Audigy 4 (YouP-Pax) and I was getting some really annoying high pitched crackling sounds earlier. Lets face it, this game runs like shit and is incredibly inefficient. The problem probably isn't your onboard sound. I'd upgrade to an Audigy 2 ZS just in case if you have around $60. I got mine on sale about $40-50 off.

Before you run out and buy a new card I would first try updating the drivers. The audio for that board is relatively new, and there have been a number of updated drivers for it directly from Realtek. The ones that Asus provide are 4 months old, while the direct ones from Realtek are 1 month old. There have been a lot of fixes to the drivers since then, and updating to the latest ones might help you out.
You can grab them from HERE. (v.1.22 also known as v.5.10.0.5128) If the link doesn't work you can get more from their site HERE, as well as check out their PDF on fixes, and additions. |

Also http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=951 try setting your sound to a lower latecy with that tool and see if it helps. In some cases its the couse of the problem.

Updated the realtek high def drivers and that seems to have fixed it. Thanks all! Now, under control panel/add remove programs can i get rid of the other audio drivers there? There are some high def drivers there by microsoft.

Not too sure if that's wise. You could inadvertantly remove parts of the Realtek ones. If anything I would remove all the HD drivers, then reinstall the Realtek ones, but it sounds (no pun intended) like it's not causing any conflicts, so it may be better just to leave them be.
Glad to hear that worked out for ya. |
