X-Wing Alliance on the 8500
After seeing EP2 at the movies I got out my old copy of X-Wing Alliance and installed it just for grins. I haven't played it in quite some time and I was really surprised with the results.
I did have to go into the .cfg file to enable Hardware acceleration for my 8500 but I was really surprised with how good it looked for a 3 year old game. You can actually play the game up to 1600X1200! LOL! Not too shabby.
You can also turn up all of the video options without a slow down. No doubt because it's old.
Anyway I just thought I'd pass this along.
*Edit* Oh also I'm playing on WinXP Pro with a 1.4 Tbird and retail 8500 64meg.

Great game!
Great game! I was just recomending it to a friend this morning. It ran faboo on my old Rage128, radeon, GF2 MX400, and GF3.
Scary admission: I still haven't finished the game. My hard-drive died when I was about 1/2 way thru and I got distracted and didn't go back to it. Someday I'll hook up my joystick and finish it. (Ya need a joystick to enjoy the game. )

You also need to get all the upgrades from the X-Wing Alliance Upgrade Project
Once installed you will never look back.
It does cause some slowdown on my rig (8500, amd 1.4, 512meg DDR, WinXP Pro) when loading up new textures - but after they've all loaded it really flies and looks very very sexy.
Only caveat is that for multiplayer games, everyone has to have the same upgrades installed.

Woo-hoo!!!
Thanks for the upgrade patch tip, that's just enough reason to go back and play it.

Has anyone tried, Pirates, lately???
There's no way to play the game on the newer systems without utilizing a slowdown utility.
