Default Post DOOM III The Legacy John Carmack interview!

Gamers.com have posted a interview they had with John Carmack about Doom III The Legacy! Here's a byte

SD: The Doom series also has a substantial multiplayer legacy behind it. What can we expect Doom III to add to that legacy?

JC: This has been one of the areas where I know we are going to get some negative feedback. Doom III will only have minimal multiplayer facilities when released, because we are concentrating all of our efforts on making it an outstanding single-player experience. We have our hands full just breaking in the new technology and creating our world, so there just aren't enough resources to go around for doing spectacular multiplayer. You will still be able to deathmatch, but don't expect anything revolutionary. We will certainly be doing follow-up titles that refocus on multiplayer. I strongly believe that it is better to do more games with a tighter focus, rather than trying to be all things to everyone in a single title.

Yes! That snip is something that I appreciate, I don't like multiplayer all that much anymore (unless its co-op of course, single play!); and I have always wished that game makers spent so much more time on building an uber single-player experience. Unfortunately, co-op play won't really work now, with such complex scripts and engines, etc. Oh, well. I want D3 now.

BTW, to anyone who have seen the screenshots at http://www.gamespot.com , isn't it kind of odd that with all of these technology advancements that, more than one monster of the same kind looks the EXACT same? :\ This worries me a bit. Are they doing this on purpose to keep with the "Doom" tradition of having every guy look the same?

Default Post Monsters & single-player focus.

I think the monsters looking all exactly the same is more of a memory/system constraint thing than any particular design choice. If you're looking for enemy variety, check out SoF2. They use their ghoul2 system not just for exploding heads and limbs, but to subtley change each charecter. (Some have glasses, some canteens, etc.)

As for them concentrating on single-player, GOOD! It's been a loooooooooong-assed time since Id has put out a decent single-player FPS. The great Carmacks weakness has never been the technical end of getting the game to run/look great, he just usually spends so much time on tweaking the engine out that he forgets to make a fun game for it.
