PSP Stuck Pixel Fixer!!!! WOOOT!!! (well.. for 60% of you that is)

I'm only going to link to the article I posted in the "PSP Hints and Tips" thread as this particular tip is very important to those that have dead pixel issues with your PSP. I figured that the thread has gotten so huge that people might miss it, plus.. my name is always being shown as the last one to post something, so people might think nothing new is really being said. At any rate, be sure to check it out if you have said issues.

PSP Stuck Pixel Fixer!!!! WOOOT!!! (well.. for 60% of you that is)

Hope this works out for you peeps that have dead pixels.

I don't have a PSP, but that is a great idea. You should be rewarded by sony for thinking of it.

Not me.. the guy that created it: Nick Toohill. Bloody brilliant.

I remember seeing mention of this for LCD TVs and LCD monitors a couple months back... never even dawned on me to try it on the PSP.

This did work on my unit though. Took about an hour for it to kick in. Right now I'm running it on a friends unit, but it's been going for 2 hours.. no luck yet. I'll probably leave one of my small MS Duos with the guys at my local EB for them to try on customers units. See what type of success they get from it.

The author of the file added a white and black still image for checking dead pixels, but I would like it if he added one for each of the colors. That way you could tell if a pixel was displaying each color properly without having to stare at a flashing image. With mine with the pixel displaying yellow instead of white, so if it did a still image of each color I would probably have realized that the pixels kicked in sooner. Plus, I wouldn't need to use the Dead Pixel Checker JPEGs to figure it out either.

I've litterally got 5 PSPs running in my house as I type this. I had 7, but the this fix corrected 2 of the systems in about 1 hour, and 3 hours respectively. So far the other 5 are being stubborn. I also used this on another system, and let it run for 24hours straight, but no luck on it.

As I mentioned, it may or may not work. That's why the percentage rate is just above 50/50. Just set it up to run in Zoom or Full screen mode, set it on repeat, and walk away. It can take mins, or it can take hours. You just have to read Zardons post to see that it can work.

BTW: This video was tried on a system that had 1 complete dead row and 1 complete dead column of pixels. Now it works perfectly.

Hey, you got nothing to lose by trying... 'cept that you might further strengthen your intense feelings of anger towards Sony for using cheap @$$ screens.

I've yet to encounter this. I guess it is possible as the video is forcing the pixels to turn off and on rapidly. However, I would assume the pixel would have to have been close to dying, or only partially functioning in the first place for it to completely die. I've run this on about 10 PSPs so far. 3 were no goes, the other 7 worked including mine. I've seen countless others posting about success, and no success, but yours is the first I've seen that has mentioned it making the system worse than better. I'm going to have to watch out for this.

I did have one funny thing happen though. It did work on one PSP, however it only lasted for short period of time. When I tried running the jpegs to check out the pixels they suddenly went out on me. It's almost like it lost it's charge or something. Kinda wierd, and only happend just on that particular PSP.

Which reminds me, if you haven't already run the series of Jpegs that was created for checking for dead pixels. You can get that HERE still. Just be sure of the state of your pixels. In my case I had one that displayed yellow instead of white, as well as no blue. Although you could see, plain as day that it wasn't displaying pure blue, you couldn't tell that it was dead otherwise.

At any rate, a couple things to note. This was originally a DVD made for LCD TVs, and was ported over for use on the PSP. Also, if the dead pixels haven't switched on within 24hours there really is no point, at least in my opinion, in continuing to run the video. Up to you though.

Edit: 06-11-05 - (I'm reposting what I added in the Hints and Tips thread) I'm just going to edit this a bit. From what I can tell the success rate is more higher for PSPs that have "Stuck" pixels, ones that continuously display 1 color, than it does on PSPs with "dead" pixels. That's not to say it won't work on dead pixeled units, but just that you shouldn't be surprised if it doesn't work, or takes longer to get it to work. Plus, if the pixel hasn't become active within 24hours of running the video then it's probably not going to come on. Your call though.

I'm such a dufuss

Idiot me. Everytime I've done a post on this I keep saying "dead" pixels... I don't know why either.. just slow this week, I guess. So, just to fix my screw ups... this will not fix dead pixels. Sorry for my hype on that.

So, this should work on "Stuck" pixels, but that's no garauntee that it will. However, those that have "dead" pixels take note: just because it looks dead doesn't mean that it is. Here's why: it could be "stuck" on black. Remember, RGB colors 0,0,0 is black. So, the pixel could be stuck on the color black, and not actually dead (or off). Big difference. Knowing that, even if you have what appears to be a dead pixel give this a shot anyways as it may not be dead. Again, use the pixel checker I've mentioned as there is a black range to test. Then decide for yourself if you want to try it or not.

I believe dead pixels are pixels that failed to activate and cannot be activated at all so they're just plain dead. These show up as plain black.

Stuck pixels are pixels that activated but got stuck a certain color like blue, green, red, or white. There may be stuck pixels that are stuck as black, or they could just be dead pixels. Unless it gets unstuck, you'll never know the difference.

It will work on TFTs too. In fact the MP4 file was created from the DVD that technicians use to fix LCD TV sets. As long as you have the codec for it you can run it no problem. I've used this on laptops and a couple LCD monitors. Just move the window for the flasher over the spot that has the bad pixel. As with the PSP it's not garuanteed to work though.
