To show off the PlayStation 3's graphical brawn, Sony showed several game demos, including an Unreal 3 tech demo of what appeared to be Unreal Tournament 2007. In what must come as a relief to developers, Epic Games' Tim Sweeney was on hand to vouch for the PS3, saying it was "easy to program for" and that Epic had received its first PS3 hardware two months ago. He proved the tech demo was real time by showing it again and manipulating the camera and zooming in.
what appears to be the first real picture of the PS3

breaking news: playstation 3 announced
since i havent newsposted in a while due to not being one anymore, here is the news we all wanted to hear. and thank god it is running more than 2 times more teraflops than xbox 360
LOS ANGELES--Today saw the second of the big three console makers announce their next-generation platform. At its pre-E3 press conference, Sony Computer Entertainment gave the world its first look at the PlayStation 3, as it now is officially called.
The name was not unexpected, since Sony had been running an extensive teaser-ad campaign prepping the public for the PlayStation 3. The company had laid a blanket of posters around the Los Angeles Convention Center, site of the Electronic Entertainment Expo (aka E3). Bus stalls and billboards around the convention center proclaimed "Prepare for Chang3" in the distinctive PlayStation font with partial shots of the Dual Shock controller's square-circle-triangle-X buttons.
Sony also confirmed the PlayStation 3, will use Blu-Ray discs as its media format. The discs can hold up to six times as much data as current-generation DVDs. It will also support CR-ROM, CDR+W, DVD, DVD-ROM, DVD-R, DVD+R formats. It also confirmed the machine would be backward-compatible all the way to the original PlayStation. It will also have slots for Memory Stick Duo, a SD slot, and a compact flash memory slot. It will also sport a slot for a detachable 2.5 inch HDD somewhat similar the Xbox 360's.
Out of the box, the PS3 will have the capability to support seven Bluetooth controllers. It will also have six USB slots for peripherals--four up front and two in the back.
Sony also laid out the technical specs of the device. The PlayStation 3 will feature the much-vaunted Cell processor, which will run at 3.2 Ghz, giving the whole system 2.18 teraflops of overall performance. It will sport 256mb XDR main RAM at 3.2 Ghz, and have 256MB of GDDR VRAM at 700mhz.
Sony also unveiled the PS3's graphics chip, the RSX "Reality Synthesizer based on Nvidia technology. The GPU will be capable of 128bit pixel precision, 1080p resolution, some of the highest HD resolution around. It also has over 300 million transistors, larger than any processor available commercially today. It was manufactured using the 90nm process with 8 layers of metal. The RSX is more powerful than two GeForce 6800 ultras, which would cost rough $1000 if bought today.
The PlayStation 3 will also sport some hefty multimedia features, such as video chat, internet access, digital photo viewing, digital audio and video. Sony Computer Entertainment head Ken Kutaragi introduced it as a "Super computer for computer entertainment

im looking at some screens friom the next GT5 that they say are from the ps3, but sure dont look like it.
http://media.ps3.ign.com/media/713/713809/imgs_1.html
but the one thing i did notice is that its got atleast a 16 car race (15 cars viewable, 1 in the front pit you cant see but is being worked on)
my guess though is there just useing most stuff from gt4 to test out bugs and what not while the high res items are still in the works.

Holy shit that's an ugly ass controller, and the bottleneck will show it's ugly head somewhere...Remember it's a sony, it'll either over heat, or have a large ass bottleneck.
Plus it looks like those ugly ass RCA directv receivers that were out a couple of years ago! Is RCA in on the design team?! ha ha

To me: It's not the look of the controller.. it's how it feels in your hand. The GC controller looks funky to me, but it feels great for most games. As for bottleneck of "screw up", I think it's going to be in the wireless controllers.
I just read the GS article about how Unreal 3 Engine demo was running smooth as silk on the PS3, so to say it's "weak" is a definite understatement. I knew these upcoming consoles were going to be on par or better than what we have currently on the realm of PCs, but this is ridiculous.
I better be able to get a multi-core CPU before the X-Box 360 hits stores!
Anyways, despite all this console hardware hooplah, I'm looking forward to all these upcoming titles like: MGS4, GT5, Fight Night (for PS3), Project Gotham 3, Halo 3, Tekken 6, Soul Calibur 4 (Not announced but can safely assume), DMC4 and oh so much more~!

i tried to figure out the dimensions of the controller and console.
i figured the analog sticks where probably the same size as the ps2, so i used that to base the measurments of the controller. it comes out to 5 1/2 inches tall, 6 3/4in wide, looks like its a little smaller then a dvd box.
for the console, i used the cd drive. comes out to be 9 1/2 tall and ~6 wide, kinda hard to tell with the angle its on.

That maybe true, but can you upgrade the hardware components for those consoles? Newer and better pc components always come out in a matter of months...
Anyways, the console itself looks nice, though it's hard to tell how large it is compared to the old and new PS2. I do like the different colors, but I like the black model the most. The controller i'm feeling iffy about, although I do agree with No Style about the feel of it rather than the "looks"...

im not a big fan of the controllers, especially the bluetooth part, rf seems more stable less latency, etc.

I feel like throwing the controller like a boomerang.
Wheeee!
Seriously, what is with the extra length?
PS2 controller didn't feel right. The Xbox Controller-S (not the behemoth. The second version, which is smaller) felt... great. Perfect actually. Especially since the analog was on the upper-left.
Trying to play GT4 with the analog on the lower left felt awkward, so I just used D-pad. Trying to play Forza with the analog felt natural and easy.
Oh and PS2 controllers felt a little... crappy. Sometimes the buttons would stop working all together. and the PS2 D-pad? Holy crap I hate it. Where's the diagonal D-pads? That's why I liked the Gamecube and Xbox controllers WAY more than the PS1 or 2 controllers.
Man, did innovation die on the controllers, for both Xbox and PS. They felt like there was nothing more to innovate.
God those are ugly controllers. I'm gonna have nightmares.
Also, exception for the screenshots, the trailers look all... pre-rendered. I'm not believing trailers until I see actual in-game footage without the photoshop make-up.
I used to download like every trailer out there until they started masking the crappy stuff so much to a point that the graphics between trailer and in-game is so far out of proportion.
And the GT5 screens... either the jpg compression sucks, or I'm seeing crappy AA.

PLAYSTATION 3 SEEMS LIKE THE WINNER
It's wayyyy more capable from Xbox360 so that means that will have Better looking games
PS3>XBOX360
The only bad is the Boomerang like Controller
Right now i am probably more enthusiastic of buying a PS3 from a XBOX360
Now it's all about of what games these consoles will support
Microsoft has been beaten to their own game...
