Half-Life 2 Wins DriverHeaven's Game of The Year Poll
Half-Life 2 wins the poll by a significant margin which is no surprise to us all. All the qualities of a outstanding game was evident in Half-Life 2 and the members of DH clearly felt that those qualities were enough to propel it towards Game of The Year status.
Congratulations and thanks go out to Valve! We all look forward to Half-Life 3!

And also I would like to be the first to toast to No_Style on spearheading the effort now dubbed 'DH GOTY' Well done, my man!

indeed...we need a logo/seal of approval.
I'll talk to Allan about letting me use the site logo for it.

I decided to play the demo that came out the other day to see what all the fuss is about. I can say one thing. I am glad that I have decided not to buy it. There is nothing really special about this game at all. It's the same old FPS gameplay.

Well it's true. Nothing too spectacular, but it did impress a lot of people and majority have said this was GOTY worthy. I personally would have chosen Metroid Prime 2 or even WoW for breaking boundaries.

And let's not forget Guild Wars. I think that the game has a lot of potential even though it's not retail yet. I am also loving MGS3:SE. Great game!

I was thinking just that. I'm not the great artist like others, so somebody else should design it

The only thing that had me impressed about HL2 were the graphics of the game. Other than that, it was just another FPS like you said.

I don't care what everyone else said. I still think Far Cry was a much better game.
That's not to say I didn't enjoy HL2....I did very much so. But, Far Cry had me hooked from beginning to end.
But, I toast the winner of the DH GOTY: Half Life 2, Cheers!

Seems a little misleading in the headline there. Should read: "FPS of the Year." If WoW had been an option I would have readily voted for it.
edit: I agree, Far Cry was a better FPS.

I do believe that HL2 is the best game of the year. Far Cry was a great game until the end where I can't get the guy jump at the right time and he just runs right off.....

this isn't unexpected
1. this is COMPUTER FORUM, therefore will vote for the PC GAME OF THE YEAR, not the xbox or gc or ps2 game of the year.
2. we love ATI, dont lie. and ATI and HL2 have been very closely knit and giving us the best performance out of our cards.

lol, HL2 was terrible. :/
For a game which had such tremendously high developement costs, two years worth of delays, and games like Far Cry and Doom 3 come out with less bumps and screw ups, yet turn out to have better story lines and more interesting plots.
Honestly, HL2 really let me down. For a game with revolutionary physics, the physics were no better than most games. Oh wow, I can shoot a pop can... yet, you can't even effect the environment? What good is a rocket launcher if it leaves a black "smudge" on the wall? What is this? Even Red Faction had that down. Mind you, HL2 > Red Faction, but I expected something a little out of the ordinary. And, why can't you kill civilians in HL2? Why was it so linear? And...the saw gun with a set-split area on the zombies? Give me a break. HL2 doesn't deserve the FPS of the year. I'd say it's a toss up between Far Cry and Doom 3. (But if I had a say in it, I'd say Far Cry)
Oh, and I'd hate to spoil HL2s fire, but... what was with the royally screwed up water in HL2? The shores were choppy and the fire was 2d. Honestly, I wish I never purchased HL2. I hope Team Fortress 2 can relieve the disappointment...

HL2 looks ok but not better than Doom3. Though D3 is a brainless game, it was much more immersive and I was scared by this game. Though many complained about D3 beeing too dark, there is a fantastic work done on lightning and shadow casting in this game.
HL2 lacks a good story and I was much more impressed by HL1. The HL2 multiplayer is bad and I keep playing Quake 3 which remains IMO the best multiplayer game ever (ufreeze is an exciting mod).
There are other games which deserve consideration especially if you seek for a brainless shooter game and Painkiller is realy fun and also uses a physical engine. Medal Of Honor was also very nice.
I don't think HL2 is so different from the rest and certainly doesn't deserve such a celebration.

Sorry to hear that HL2 won, after so much time and BS getting the game out,and FARCRY coming out of know where, and taking the gameing world by storm I will always think FC should have won. Also the fact that VM:Bloodlines was not considered in the pole when it was a finished product but held up because of HL2 being delayed. My voucher is now a collectors item and will hang above my workstation for ever a reminder of how not to buy a video card because of a supposed inclosed game,...LOL.Other than that HAPPY NEW Year!!! There was a poll and WoW was in it for the PC Contestents. However, the majority of the people here voted for HL2.

boooo
nuts to half life 2, big disappointment. all cars and nothing to do.
impressive physics, characters and effects,
bad plot? (what plot ? what was going on ?), little gameplay, no atmosphere,
and what was with the dulll use of the walkers ? only lasted a few days too..seemed a bit unfinished to me. oh well..
thief 3 all the way, riddick for its amazing textures/shaders and filmic plot (this is what riddick 2 movie should have been). doom3 had bags of atmosphere, great engine and had some good fights. painkiller IS the new doom, never seen so many enemies hehe.. far cry is good too but i`m a saver of many games and it bugs me you cant (i know i`m bad at it 8-)
all FPS suffered from being way too short though. the fps of yesterday lasted for ever, now they are really pretty and really short due to development time. a few more longer levels with stuff to do/shoot please. just rehash some levels with LOTS of baddies ? easy..
good year for FPShooters though

Half-Life 2 was a huge disapointment for me as well. At one point I gasped out loud when I noticed how ATROCIOUS the textures maps where on the buggy and boat when you drove them. I mean.. come on.. where's the bump mapping? The textures looked like a 8 bit burry mess. That's just one little nitpick.. but when stuff like that starts to add up I start to get jadded.
My top 5 last year:
1. Far Cry =-GOTY-=
2. Chronicles of Riddick PC
3. Joint Operations
4. Half-Life 2
5. Doom 3
IMHO.
