Activate Half Life 2 without internet?
Damn!
Just got my new rig up and running trouble free after weeks of rma's and trouble (turns out voltage starved ram was corrupting windows installs) and now I am FINALLY ready to tear the plastic off of Half-Life 2. Problem is that I'm in temporary living arrangements and don't have internet access for my game rig.
Question: Are there any work arounds to the online activation? I want to see my new rig in all its glory and what better way than HL2???
Anyone care to give me the skinny on this?

You have to authenticate online through Steam, or you can't play... simple as that.

Just like they said above....you HAVE to have a working Internet connection to validate your CD Key and to download and deciper certain files in order to play the game.
AND, just like you, I think it stinks!!! But, that's the skinny on the beast called STEAM.

Crap. Is this do-able over 56k or is it some humongous file? No way am I paying to have cable installed only to move in a month. I'm sure I can find a free dial up trial though....

I accomplished it on a crappy dial-up that won't connect at above 26,600. So, yes, if I can do it, anybody can do it. You'll just have to be patient and I hope you don't pay by the hour.

There's always a way...
You certainly can do it with a 56k modem. And you can also do it without it. Since you already purchaced the game, I see nothing wrong in your getting an "unofficial" version, which would spare you the activation through Steam. I really don't know how much would that cost you, and that would be a temporary solution, since you would be unable to get patches and such stuff.

The proper answer to this is "yes, you have to have itnernet to activate it(even slow internet will do, however)"
The actual answer, as I'm sure you know, is that there is always another way, but those often can't be discussed.
So if you have itnernet, even dial-up, I'd just suck it up and spend the time to activate it...the files aren't that big.

If you dont have an internet connection you could use the free netzero 10 hours a month dial up to activate.
