Been playing this (of & on) since December last year, best space sim ever..,
but be prepared to do a steap learing curve & long trade run's in the beginning
How you going to makeing your fortune is completely up to you, it really is your life in space, and life can be a drag sometimes but also very rewarding, when you step in your first Battleship.
Advice: do step away from the storyline (you'll be adviced when) to build up your empire and fighter fleet, life is hell out there!! And noone to help you & do use the simulator to learn the tricks
get the 1.4 update from egosoft it makes your life in space even worse

In-game Bmark says I do 60 fps, in 1280x960x32 2xAA + bumpmapping on, wich is enough
only in big fights with lots of (big) ships it does slows down alot, but still is playable
The Enterprise is a Mod, lots of scripts available, look in Ego soft's forum

I couldnt figure out how to play it anyway, the graphics were good but i just didnt feel like spending a while trying to learn it, and i had just bought farcry. So farcry doesnt really have a learning curve.......more like if something moves then shoot in that direction. works pretty well

Yeah, it is not for everyone.. in X2 one has to use his brain
I played FC also; great graphics..
...but it never was able to drag me in the game like CoD or even HL did

It is an open end game and thus as long as you want it to be, although there is a story/plot, after that it is up to you how you go on
if you want tips or have question just PM me
or go to Egosoft's forum where you'll find the most tips, scripts or mod's,
I still try to survive and make a livin in the massive warmod.
but finish the normal game first, or get your #ss on a platter every 5 min's ..you have learn to crawl before you can walk

A few tips to start with:
Start: difficulty :choose easy (game isn't harder on higher levels, only your starting ship will have lesser equipment)
Docking at stations: manual: fly to station when distance = <3km press "c" to ask docking permission, wait for green lights, fly in docking port (watch your speed, look @ the green dot on your speed indicator)
easy way = press "." for sector map, find the station you need (scroll until its highlighted) press "t", press "esc", press "u" e voila it does it all by itself .
My way: point when in space to station, target the station, press "t" & press "u"
after dockin press "esc" to get to the station menu (you can after docking fly manual to the dock place, sometimes there are some goodies flyijng around)
First mission: simple just deliver some goods, if you got lost your way check your mission objetive (press return in space).
usefull: press "H" for help on KB key's.

Thanks for all the info... do you recommend doing any of the simulations, or should I just get straight into the game?

The simulation will learn you the basics, like how to persuade the Captain of a mammouth (big transportship) to dock at the Shipyard, and buy and placing bought factorys, but you can alway just jump in the deep, and later try the simulation when needed

How do you sell an item ,i tried everything, then managed to see the cpu parts but cant remember what button i pressed!
Also, are there ways of making space travel quicker and the HUD or cockpit view - well i wanted to disable it. Would that be possible, so i have more view from cockpit.
