If I'm going to pay, I prefer to get the box, cd, etc., otherwise, I could just as easily pirate the same thing.

You can pirate SP, but MP is more difficult.
This ultimately a way to save money for publishers..but I'd like to see something in the future of a "CD-Key Store"
MP games usually need a valid CD-Key. I think to appeal more to people who don't care much about an SP, companies should start selling CD-Keys for like $15 USD a key. I'm sure they would make more money like that. It really stinks when you have sibs, or multiple computers and have to buy a $50, 2 or 3 times.

Much like the "spawn" copies of older games... they were a great idea, except many games didn't support spawns properly after patching, or expansions.

So most of the time they spent talking about Gabe. Which makes the article compete dribble.
So who set up steam? Gabe. Who wants to charge for online gaming? Gabe. Seeing a pattern?
I love the last little line. "There was little consensus [between company representatives] on this question, but time will surely tell [weather or not online distribution becomes standard]. " Which contradicts a line earlier in the article.
But I'm not here to pick apart what gamespots editor should have already.
Personally; I'll never buy an online distributed game ala steam or whatever they decide to call their service. Ordering a game CD/DVD and box online is fine. But the net will never be a viable option for content distribution. Data requirements have jumped too high. With a 5 CD game fed ex can get it to you faster than downloading on a 2.5mbps connection.
