Half life 2, has the wait soured your taste?
Well as most of you know I posted a front page poll a week or so ago asking about Doom 3. Half life 2 etc. and ill admit im a little surprised (not in a bad way) that Half life 2 is coming out tops with 50% of the vote.
As most of you also probably know this game was due to be released last september with the launch of the 9800 and never made it, then it was meant to be released spring and now its due pretty soon again.
Are you all still as excited about playing the game (I know its going to be a massive game for all the ATI guys), or has this continued wait soured your taste for it.
Im not asking for another massive debate on this subject but im just curious to hear if Farcry and the imminent release of Doom 3 have stolen its thunder over the last months.
Views? opinions?

I was hyped.
The movies looked cool. But those were just movies. I think I was just anxious for something new, but now that Doom 3 is rolling in, it's all changed. I guess I was never interested in HL2 in the first place. I never played the first HL. I'll play it when it comes out, but it isn't something I'm looking forward to, like Doom 3. And as an engine, it's not bringing anything except CS and all the other mods using the HL Engine now. Who knows, in a year's time or something, I may be play CS:Source depending on how much has improved...

Im torn on it.
I loved Half life and I love the look of V2, some awesome physics, but Doom 3 is already appealing to me more (due to "horror" nature of the game) and from my daily persuals of forums it looks generally that this is turning into a scenario such as below.
ATI user "Who cares about Doom3 - HL2 is out soon and it will pawn doom3"
Nvidia user "bleh, Gordon Freeman is a gay mofo, Doom3 rocks"
ATI User "doom 3 looks like a cheapass horror b movie, look at the physics in HL2!"
Nvidia user "you are bitter cause Doom3 ownz u ! nvidia has double the frame rates, kiss my a$$"
ATI User "wait until next month when the new opengl driver comes out then doom 3 will rock ur world gaylord!"
Nvidia user "bleh, opengl on ATI always sucked - Doom 3 is the game of the year"
and yes some of this is exaggerated for effect but have a poke around forums on the net today (dont leave here of course ) and you will see this is now turning into a ATI/HL2 v Nvidia/Doom3 war. quite sad

LOL Fanboy-ism summed up very nicely. I'm an ATI user, I've been for a very long time, I credit nVidia for making a great card like the 6800GT, but I'm not shallow enough to dislike a game just because it doesn't run as well on my hardware.
"Nvidia user "bleh, Gordon Freeman is a gay mofo, Doom3 rocks" This one is very popular.
When I was playing the alpha of Doom 3, it was beautiful. I loved it. The zombies were actually quite scary. I hope they're also unkillable (to an extent you have to blast off their legs or give a headshot to kill), like in the demo. There aren't enough scary games out there!

To be honest I haven't lost any interest in the game and all the mag previews I've been reading are just adding fuel to the fire. But I really do hope they have put all this extra time to good use and hope the game runs and looks good with no bugs(which are expected with a game of this size). I love Doom 3, I know it will be awesome and that I'll enjoy it but HL2 is the one I've been really waiting for

im looking forward to both, I just think Doom3 is going to be the game of the year. I played an early beta and it is the only game in the last 5 years or more to have made me jump (heart pounding) - played it late at night in a dark room..... what an experience.
It amuses me to read comments like i posted above because I just dont understand this undying loyalty to a company without any form of rationality. Maybe its because someone has just spend 400-500 on a card they need to feel as if its been a worthwhile expenditure.
Ill be hopefully playing doom3 on a 6800 ultra im lucky ive that and a X800XT PE hehe.

BTW did you guys read this?
"Image fidelity is dependent on what quality level we load the textures at.
In Ultra quality, we load each texture; diffuse, specular, normal map at full resolution with no compression. In a typical DOOM 3 level, this can hover around a whopping 500MB of texture data. This will run on current hardware but obviously we cannot fit 500MB of texture data onto a 256MB card and the amount of texture data referenced in a give scene per frame ( 60 times a second ) can easily be 50MB+. This can cause some choppiness as a lot of memory bandwidth is being consumed. It does however look fantastic :-) and it is certainly playable on high end systems but due to the hitching that can occur we chose to require a 512MB Video card before setting this automatically. "

I hope..
I hope, HL2 doesn't bring things which have already been brought. HL was successful because it did things nobody ever did, but since then a lot of games mimic it. Let's just hope that Valve did a good enough job of mixing the nostalgia and bringing something new to the table. Doom 3, in my opinion, has a good position of doing very well because it's doing things not many games have done, or done successfully. So far the only games which I can think of which have zombies and that deep of an atmosphere are Resident Evil and/or Silent Hill games. Painkiller doesn't count, sorry
Hehe, I hope ammo isn't as liberally placed as in the original Doom games, the fear of running out of ammo adds a lot of tension

Yea, good stuff. I'm hoping I can run it at that with only 256mb though. You know I'm going for it right from the start lol
But I think you got it right in your above post Z, the games have definitely started a war between the two companies and it is sad as I think both games with be enjoyable on either cards.

First person Silent Hill 3 to more exact. I disliked 2, quite a lot. It was more stupid than scary. Number 3 hit the mark very well, and if third time's the charm for Silent Hill.. Let's hope Doom 3 will strike something wonderful as well.
The time of slaying other humans has ended, let us all rejoice in kicking zombie butt and send demons back to Hell Don't forget to empty your bladder before doing so

CS should always come free! It'll be breaking some serious traditions (and hearts) if it doesn't. Everybody has always associated "Buy HL and get CS free." Selling a community mod (original CS) was bad enough... But Valve should uphold one of the reasons why everybody loved CS.. It was free!

Well I am looking forward to Doom 3 personally more than HL2, like No_Style i never played the first HL. As for Condition Zero I thought it sucked, but i never gave it much playing time either.
I know that Doom 3 is gonna be a bitch as far as sucking the life out of my poor video card but that does not change the fact that I am an ATI user.
I have to upgrade my video card soon anyway and hope to land an x800 Pro, if not I hope a 256MB 9800 Pro will suffice

Looks like this game is going to bring even the X800XTPE and 6800 ULTRA to their knees, the texture memory consumption is insane. ultra settings as I posted above.

On the other hand one could argue that not using any texture compression at all is kinda nuts. So ultra setting could just as well be named nutty setting instead. On the other hand it has also been typical for id Software games to not really fly until run on hardware available 12-18 months after their release. I'm only really interested to find out how well the story element plays out though, as it seems to hold some promise of being a positive surprise.
On Half-Life 2 I don't care a bit. Maybe it won't even be out this year so just forget about anyone or just as much Valve themselves say until it's really shipping. Then it might be worth a look.

Depends..
If I would be forced to use Steam just to play the single player mode , then Valve can stick HL2 where the sun don't shine..
But if Steam is not needed for SP, then i will surely buy & play it... oh yes I will!!

Took the words right out of my mouth.
I was looking forward to doom 3 back when they first revealed the tech with the geForce 3. You know the now bland looking little movie with the werewolf looking guy and all that. I mean people talk about being sour about HL2 but some people like myself have been waiting for D3 for a very long time.
I'm starting to find the longer I wait the more I don't care. In some ways I much prefer the days when I could go down to the store and see that a game came out as opposed to waiting 5 years for it.
I'll still buy D3. Probably not till after a demo or its in the bargain bin.
