Age of Mythology REQUIRES over 512mb of ram
OK.... after dealing with the game for awhile now..
You cannot run over 5 computers on 512mb of ram... lan game? 3 players.....
I've finally came to the conclusion... this game sucks memory like you wouldn't believe... even on my barton 2500+ @ 3000+ with a gb of ram.... it's sucking that all up....
If i turn on Virtual Memory.... the game will still run... but it slows down right at the start... and actually comes to a crawl and sometimes crashes within 2 hours... on a machine with 512mb of ram
i know the game is massive.... it doesn't appear to have any memory leak as when you save a multiplayer game... and resume.... it takes that space up right away again....
I mentioned this awhile back that i kept catching this game using up all my ram.. and then just over the 1500mb of virtual memory....
Running the game with a gb is prime..... just good enough... i don't know how anyone could play through an entire game with less then 512...
(game fully patched)

I've been checking up on that game since the online beta and your description is very familiar. It seems that on some systems something makes the RAM usage go overboard, while on most systems that issue does not appear or at least not so heavily. In some cases it has been shown to be related to the soundcard drivers and turning off Sound Hardware Acceleration in the game is a thing to try. Another setting worth to try turning off for multiplayer games is unit Footprints.
Also check with the task manager so that it really is the game that is drawing all th RAM. On my own system I don't think I've ever seen it need more than 350-400MB with everything on in fairly large multiplayer games.
On a generic note about having a lot of RAM and the swap file, WindowsXP always needs a bit of it and will create its own if one tries to disable it. Applications may also call for swap file storage regardless of the level of free physical RAM.
If nothing helps, perhaps it might be worth a try to uninstall the game and then install fresh with the latest update. Recently I have only seen very few reports of RAM usage problems amongst AoM gamers.

... it's the game already.... currently happens on to different systems... although somewhat similare.... I'm using a digifire sound card.... which i've never had an error with the game... however, it does slow down to a crawl with only 512mb.... 1024... and this game smooth..... the other computer has or is using onboard sound... It will oventually crash.. regardless of how many computer players.....
I'm going to stick another 512 into that machine to see what happens...
Single player... though... doesn't touch it.. does slow down and get choppy though... only has crashed once out of all the time i've played single player..
