XMP review

"Well, its not as confusing as tribes." I quote my friend on that. It's not. Though sadly it lacks some interface elements. Only after playing for a few hours am I attempting to get a grasp on gameplay. The tutorial would have been more useful if it had an actual map to play around on.

Past the learning curve... generally the gameplay is quite acceptable. Dynamic player shadows seem to be removed... thats ok though. Its unreal and is still quite good looking. Sound is a little buggered but thats the sound storm's fault.

Back to the interface issue: It's very hard to tell whats going on. The minimap is not quite enough for a good strategy. Knowing the maps real well seems to be the best weapon. This kind of makes gameplay suck, as if you've never played the map before it can be over before you find anything. There needs to be more feedback to the player on whats going on somehow.

Just my thoughts. I'm going to go back and play it some more... Oh and I should wonder if anyone else experiences weapon lag even on low ping servers?

When I was playing XMP Demo

I didn't find it very appealing. The networking doesn't appear to be very mature either. Yeah, it's very much like Tribes. Explain this "weapon lag"

Ahh well, I found out the weapon lag was being caused by setting my connection on dynamic. What was happening was I'd say fire a rocket and move then see the rocket go.

Yeah. I think I had a run in with a guy that just wouldn't die.

Hacks: the llama's penis extension.

I saw that UNREAL2 was 9.99 at CompUsa and I had to go get it. It was worth it. XMP is alot of fun. Wow, thats the first game I bought in I don't know how long I am curious what kind of video card is everyone using, what in games settings, what resolution and aa and af. Lastly, what kind of frames per second are you getting. I am using a ATI 9800XT with 256mb Vram. I have all in game settings maxed out, playing at 1600x1200x32. I have my AA set to 4x and my AF set to 8x. I have been messing around with 2xaa and 16af since at 1600x1200 not many jaggies. I get a low of 28-30fps and a high of 60-80 fps. I hope LEGEND has a big part in designing UT2004. This is what Halo SHOULD have been. Great game. Appreciate input. Thanks,

Glenn

WTF?! Already. CS for HL2 better be revolutionary in terms of anti hacking. PunkBuster is working very nicely for RTCW and I think it's doing its job for ET and other ones it supported as well.

$10?! That's cheaper than what UT2K3 is here in Canada. $20 over @ EB. UT2K4 should not be bring systems down at default. If I'm not mistaken they are using the exact same engine, just pushing it at little further. It's great to see another game being made with the Unreal Engine. I hope more developers pick it up cuz it's a great engine. Q3 Engine is still, in my opinion, the king though. Q3 to JK: Jedi Outcast graphics. Outstanding.

I LOVE THIS GAME!!!!!! You know how alot of games do not fully immerse you because its a cheesy capture the flag, or team deathmatch fragfest. This game actually has some strategy too it, which really draws you in. Its SO MUCH BETTER than UT2003. I wish I would have played the first unreal to compare it. I hear that its a totally different style game. I finally settled on 1600x1200x32 All In Game Settings maxed (Slider to 6) 2XAA and 16xAF. It looks and plays beautifully. It stays at a steady 35-40 frames per second and climbs to 80+ sometimes. Here are some screen shots at different resolutions, with all in game settings maxed. Enjoy.

1600x1200x32 4xAA 16XAF (Played ok, but had some slowdown in firefights, so I switched to 2xAA and 16XAF..plays much better.)

1600x1200x32 4XAA 16XAF (Played fair, but I decided that 4xAA was not needed using 1600x1200 Graphics)

1280x1024x32 4xAA 16XAF (Played smooth, but I prefer the textures with 1600x1200 on my 21' Sony Monitor.)
